A FEMtech Question

According to the decription on the 1871 website:

1871 FEMTech will offer:

  • A flexible and family friendly experience – 1871 FEMtech is a rigorous, yet flexible incubator program structured around the demands of female entrepreneurs and work-life balance
  • Tailored content and mentorship designed specifically around the individual companies admitted into the program
  • Access to the 1871 community and all of its resources
  • Access and mentorship from some of Chicago’s top female business leaders
  • Access to 1871’s top University partnerships including University of Illinois, University of Chicago, Northwestern University and The Illinois Institute of Technology
  • Access to capital through 1871’s strong connections to the city’s top venture capitalists
  • Local and national exposure through 1871’s strong media connections
  • And much more…

I would like to hear a conversation that goes into more detail about what / how / why "the demands of female entrepreneurs" are different from those of men and why women require a more "flexible and family friendly experience" than men. Is the focus here more on parent entrepreneurs, in which case the question is really about the needs of mothers versus fathers?

Anything that provides opportunity is to be cheered, but it is important to be clear on these points or risk going down a slippery slope toward a "pink ghetto."

Similarly, why the skew toward "Access and mentorship from some of Chicago’s top female business leaders" rather than access and mentorshop from some of Chicago's top business leaders, period? I understand the power of role models, but in my personal experience, mentors who happen to have been men have also been incredibly important.

Finally, although the effort to bring more women-led startups into the mix is great, is there a downside to creating a gender-based program? It is the same issue of an all women's school versus a co-ed campus. There are pluses and minuses to both, though the world beyond graduation is co-ed.

I am really interested in hearing people's thoughts. Thank you.
