Former Epiq, Trumbull Group Exec Tapped for Senior Esquify Role

Lorenzo Mendizabal, a noted attorney and bankruptcy specialist who has served in various leadership roles at Epiq Systems and Trumbull Group, has joined Esquify as executive director of sales.

Esquify is a Chicago-based legal tech startup that focuses on the document review segment of the e-discovery market. Its solution combines machine learning and advanced communications technologies to enable virtual document review and its supervision and monitoring. Esquify was recently named one of Chicago's 50 top tech startups to watch by the Built in Chicago tech community and resource.

“We consider it a coup to have been able to enlist Lorenzo to assist us on our growth path,” said Scott Y. Stuart, Esquify’s co-founder and co-chief executive. “His entrepreneurial mindset, knowledge base and legal contacts have helped him lead other organizations to considerable success, and we are confident he will do the same here.”

Mendizabal said he looked forward to introducing the Esquify proposition to the legal community. “It’s a great opportunity to improve general market standards with an effective way to simplify the review process, enhancing transparency, control and oversight,” he said. “And at the end of the day, it lowers the expense of document review, making it a truly winning tech solution.”

For the last 20 years, Mendizabal has been involved in various aspects of business bankruptcy, restructuring and growth strategies. As managing director of bankruptcy services for Epiq Systems, he was responsible for designing business model changes that pushed it to market dominance even as he managed such high profile bankruptcies as Lehman Brothers, Enron and MF Global.  Starting at Epiq as a senior vice president in 2006, he was responsible for positioning the organization with a business platform that’s still utilized today.

Prior to joining Epiq, he was president of the Trumbull Group, a bankruptcy claims administration business that he created within The Hartford in 2000 and grew to $30 million in revenues in four years. He began with The Hartford in 1996. As senior counsel, he oversaw fraud investigation and collection litigation for large corporate accounts.

Mendizabal holds his undergraduate degree from Hartwick College, and his Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School.  He is a frequent writer and speaker on bankruptcy and business restructuring issues, including the role of technology in matters like claims administration. He resides in Bloomfield, CT.

“Esquify is experiencing significant traction with the legal community, which understands the value we create in improving the document review process,” said Drew Stern, co-founder and co-chief executive. “Our ability to recruit someone of Lorenzo’s caliber to help drive our growth is a major endorsement.”
