How Does High Fructose Corn Syrup Harm Kids?

“When used in moderation, high fructose corn syrup is a major cause of heart disease, obesity, cancer, dementia, liver failure, tooth decay and more,” writes Mark Hyman, MD, in his Huffpost Healthy Living blog. He goes on to write, “Doubt and confusion are the currency of deception, and they sow the seeds of complacency.” And the idea that high fructose corn syrup will not harm us is skillfully sold through the media via massive print and television advertising by the corn industry.

A study published in January 2012 in the Journal of Nutrition not only reaffirms Hyman’s view it is the first to look at how fructose affects heart health of adolescents. The study features 559 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years. Researchers from the Department of Pediatrics at Georgia Health Sciences University took fasting blood samples that were measured for a variety of heart health markers. They found that higher fructose consumption was associated with several heart disease risk factors including high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels and increased levels of C-reactive protein, which is a marker of inflammation. The researchers conclude that high fructose consumption may be associated with an increased risk of heart disease in adolescents.

Why is high fructose corn syrup worse than cane sugar? Hyman provides a compelling case in his blog, the bottom line of which is that high fructose corn syrup is industrially produced and is not biochemically or physiologically the same as what is euphemistically referred to as “corn sugar.” But the real point he drives home is the amount of sugar in the average diet. “Our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed the equivalent of 20 teaspoons [of sugar] per year, not per day,” writes Hyman.

Because high fructose corn syrup is so inexpensive to make, it has become ubiquitous in our food supply and can be hard to avoid; however, key culprits that typically contain large quantities of high fructose corn syrup and that should be avoided are sugar-sweetened drinks and processed foods.
