Lights, camera, action! In-house motion-media production makes for smarter marketing at closerlook, inc.

Setting the Stage

As a story-focused marketing agency, closerlook has always found ways to grab the attention of an audience. In 1987, closerlook started as a video-production house, flying all over the world to capture footage and tell stories for various clients across a number of industries.

These days, the five-person Motion Media team at closerlook—which handles production, direction, animation, editing, and even the composition of original scores—carries on the agency’s tradition of capturing and crafting compelling stories, but now focuses exclusively on the pharmaceutical industry. Whether creating immersive 3D medical animation, directing a patient documentary, or producing an interactive article for physicians, the members of closerlook’s Motion Media team tell compelling brand stories in everything they do.

“Our motion media group has evolved over the years,” said Dan Hervey, closerlook’s Motion Media Director. “At the heart of it all is a continuing focus on telling stories that connect with us as humans and matter to our clients’ audiences.”

Ready for Our Close-up

It’s rare for pharma agencies to have motion-media and production expertise in-house. With years of experience and hundreds of productions under their belt, the motion team at closerlook brings a hard-earned wisdom to every shoot. “Our team is uniquely fine-tuned to address the needs of our pharma clients,” Hervey said. “Producing these programs is not a simple task. It’s an experience thing, but it’s more than just feel. Over the years, we’ve engineered tools and processes that enable us to capture the best content to tell the right story.”

Ryan Kasner, Creative Director at closerlook, adds, “Our 3D animators have a deep understanding of the Protein Data Bank, where they can dig into the visual nuances of what the MAdCAM-1 or the alpha4beta7 proteins look like, how they move, how they interact on the molecular level.”

This kind of scientific precision goes beyond what an average animator might bring to the table. And at closerlook, it’s an essential part of conveying the accurate story of how a client’s drug works in a patient’s body.

A True Ensemble Production

Another benefit of having this team in-house is that they educate people in every department about how film and animation work. “Once you have that knowledge as an agency, it makes all aspects of a campaign better,” said Kasner. “It is truly a privilege to be part of a creative group that includes motion media pros like Dan and his crew. They’re brand experts, storytellers and our not-so-secret weapon.”

That kind of deep understanding and insight-driven work is even selling itself these days. “We are producing a patient documentary series for a new client right now,” Kasner said, “not because we did a great job selling them on our video work, but because they heard an existing client talk about how valuable our motion-media programs are to their brands.”

The Motion Media team at closerlook is made up of experienced creative professionals who bring a love for storytelling into focus on their clients and their campaigns. Even after only a short conversation with Ryan and Dan, it’s apparent that closerlook puts in the time to make their work count, get things right, and get smarter about what they do everyday.
