Featured Topic: The Slight Mistake at the Heart of Agile

It's been ten years since the signing of the Agile Manifesto and quite a bit has happened. Agile has spread throughout the industry and, rather than being an upstart movement, it is now considered mainstream. Over the past several years, however, it's become obvious that enterprise transition to Agile is not easy. Quite often it fails, or fails to yield benefits that are easily realized in smaller organizations. In response to this, we an adapt, or try harder, and those strategies seem to be pervasive in the industry. However, we can take time to question why it is so hard and consider that there may be a reformulation or change in emphasis which sidesteps the difficulty.

In this talk, Michael Feathers will explain a bit of the early history of Agile and talk about how there are organizations outside the Agile community that are taking advantage of a key insight that we missed early on.

About the Speaker:

Michael Feathers is Chief Scientist of Obtiva and author of Working Effectively with Legacy Code.

Michael is an active member of the Agile/XP community and a member of the ACM and IEEE. He regularly speaks at software conferences around the world. When Michael isn’t engaged with a team, he spends his time investigating new ways of altering design over time in codebases. His key passion is helping teams surmount problems and connect with practices that make software development fun and enriching.

Registration for this event is now open.

Lead-in Activity

As always, the first half-hour of the event is reserved for networking and food. Pizza and pop will be provided, so come hungry, grab a couple slices of pizza, and get to know the other attendees who are making Agile Leadership happen in Chicago.

Follow-up Activity: OpenSpace

Following the talk, attendees will take part in an OpenSpace discussion forum.  At least one topic will focus on the theme of other “impossible” situations for Agile, but attendees are free to propose any topic for discussion.  An OpenSpace session is a high-energy experience:  more structured than chit-chat, less rigid than following an agenda.  If you’ve never participated in an OpenSpace event, be prepared to be surprised!  For more about OpenSpace, see the original definition at AgileOpen.net.
