Patient as Partner

I just finished reading:  http://blog.himss.org/2012/05/17/patients-as-partners/'

The Doctor is ALWAYS right.  Just tell him what ails you and he will fix it.

Have you ever been asked?

  • What questions are on your mind?
  • Do you understand what an interaction is, how to handle it and when to come back and see me?
  • Do you know the number to call if you have any questions that come up after you leave here?
  • Do you understand your options for hospital care?  Follow up care?
  • Do you have any input on your course of treatment that you would like for me to consider?
  • Do you know first hand of any family history related to this condition?  Are you able to find out that information?
  • Do you know how to prepare for this test, surgery, procedure, etc.

And if you HAVE been asked any of these questions, did you have answers?  Did you have questions to ask?

Have you ever purchased a car?  a new phone?  a gadget of sorts? and walked out of the store with asking a single question?  Why?

We have been conditioned that Dr.s are authority figures.  That their course of action is to be followed, not questioned.  But for a moment, think of a world where 'patients are partners'.  Where we work WITH the physician to recieve optimum care.

Are YOU ready for THAT world?  We are.
