Selling fear, uncertainty and doubt: FUDy marketing for cloud technology

Raise your had if you've seen a headline with one of these phrases:

  • "Is XX ready for the enterprise?"

  • "Can companies really rely on XX?"

  • "Cloud confusion reigns in XX"

  • "Dark clouds on the horizon for XX industry"

Ever noticed how many technology companies target their customers with fear, uncertainty and doubt? Wish there was some way to talk out cloud concerns without the FUD?

Why is FUD the go-to marketing tacktic for brands selling VOIP phones to installed hardware?

And Americans aren't alone.  ”We’ve managed to confuse the hell out of customers,” said  Jim Darragh, the newly installed CEO of Abiquo, a provider of cloud technologies quoted in this GigaOM article.  ”There are 160 different elements of European legislation pertaining to cloud.”

So what are cloud customers, vendors, and providers to do? Will we ever trust each other?
Come to CloudCamp Chicago on Thursday, Nov 21 to share your thoughts and questions in a vendor-free environment.

The Nov 21 CloudCamp theme is "Fighting Cloud FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt)" Listen to 5- 10 minute lightning talks, join in on the unpanel discussion, and offer up your own cloud predictions. The only rules: no sales pitches, and no FUD!

CloudCamp is an 'unconference' where early adopters of Cloud Computing technologies exchange ideas. Come share your cloud experiences, challenges and solutions. At CloudCamp, attendees are encouraged to share thoughts in open discussions and short talks. End users, IT pros and the cloud curious are all encouraged to come!

As always, the unconference provides vendor-neutral and unbiased opinions. As a community, we try to answer questions and discuss issues in a fun and educational way. The events are both educational and an opportunity to network with fellow cloud users.

We keep vendor sales pitches to a minimum by giving the audience 'red cards' - if you don't like what the speakers are saying send them off!

CloudCamp Chicago is part of the global network of CloudCamp events. CloudCamp Chicago is curated and organized by Margaret at CohesiveFT. For talking suggestions, sponsorship opportunities and questions find CloudCamp via email / twitter / linkedin
