Startup Life Echoes AmeriCorps = Getting Things Done

Recently, while enjoying a nearly perfect summer Chicago night out with friends, our conversation suddenly hit several thought-provoking notes that made me reflect on where I have been, where I currently am, and where I wish to be in the future. Something in particular stood out in terms of what sort of environment and mindset I wish to continue to surround myself in. A team-centered environment focused on: Getting Things Done.

I spent a year serving with City Year Washington, DC from 2011 - 2012. For those who have never heard of City Year, City Year is an education-focused AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students and schools succeed.

While I did not love every aspect of the program, the end experience was nothing short of incredibly rewarding and life-changing. Throughout the entire program, I was out of my comfort-zone and was thrown challenges left and right. There was no such thing as an ordinary day but there was one constant each and every day: a team-centered environment. Everyday, I knew I was part of a team of bright individuals who were ready to leverage one another’s skill sets in order to ensure everyone was able to overcome each and every challenge.

I have been fortunate enough to continue working in a team-centered environment, focused on “Getting Things Done,” with ReviewTrackers. For a more buttoned-down description on what ReviewTrackers, simply visit our LinkedIn page. From my view of things, we are a young SaaS startup, constantly testing out new ideas and feverishly working on improving our product, not just for our customers’ benefit but for the entire consumer experience our product has an impact on.

I am a few months off from hitting my second year with ReviewTrackers but as I currently reflect on where I am today and where we are as a team, I have come to realize ReviewTrackers embodies many of the same points in the AmeriCorps pledge:

I will get things done for America - to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.

I will bring Americans together to strengthen our communities.

Faced with apathy, I will take action.

Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground.

Faced with adversity, I will persevere.

I will carry this commitment with me this year and beyond.

I am an AmeriCorps member, and I will get things done.

The AmeriCorps pledge might be a tad more altruistic, especially as we are a for-profit operation, however, I do truly feel our entire team has in some way, shape, or form taken this pledge.

The part that resonates the most and what I believe to be a gigantic part of our culture at ReviewTrackers, along with startup culture, is: ”Faced with apathy, I will take action." It has simply wielded itself as part of our daily routines which makes for a very exciting and challenging, yet rewarding, environment to be in.

Because of this, I am incredibly prideful of being a ReviewTrackers employee.
