Transparent Startup

Transparent Startup

I am a junkie on TechCrunch. I have got very used to comapnies in "stealth mode", and a CEO starting "we do not disclose this and that". It was refreshing to learn that one company (unfortunately I forgot the company) went the opposite route. It fully discloses everything on its blog: the number of customers, the revenue, etc. I was impressed by it, and wondered why no other startups do that. In the end, startup does not die because competitors steal the info and kills theml it dies when the execution is bad.

And I realize that I need to eat the dogfood myself. I cannot just advocate something that I do not practice myself. So here you go. I will start pubslih a series of articles on how I am running Tenantify, and the result of it.

So far, my marketing effort is mostly on commenting on real estate sites such as Trulia and Zillow, and am thinking about Reddit soon. Reddit is a hard case to crack, as you cannot be too promotional about anything, otherwise the Redditters will trash you. So I am still on the sideline and will observe the best reddiquette before going further.

The result: We have 332 visits to the site. 5 become paying customers, with a revenue of $90.

While visits to Tenantify were down to 332 visits last week, they were up from 44 visits year-over-year. The decline in traffic was driven by referrals, which slid 24% to 188 visits.

  • Last week, visitors spent almost twice as much time on the site as they did the week ending Mar. 09, 2014. Unfortunately, that's still less than a year ago (nearly 4 minutes versus 5.4 minutes).
  • Tenantify's bounce rate was down 10 percentage points to 51%. A year ago, it was 55%, so it's improved since then but you're roughly even year-over-year.
  • There were fewer unique visitors last week (down 29% to 242), although that's up compared to a year ago when Tenantify had 11 unique visitors.
