It was a surprise when Google acquired Motorola Mobility. Is Google getting in the phone business? If yes, Google will be competing with its strategic partners, which does not sound a right. Of course, people say that Google bought Motorola for its thousands of patents. Maybe that is true. There is more to Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

I believe Google bought Motorola Mobility to sell its phone business to one of its partners. Google’s long-standing strategy has been to be in Cloud, and offer cloud based applications in competition to Microsoft’s Office products. Google senses that BING maybe gaining some ground, and Google wants to gain ground in Microsoft’s turf. How can then Google make its application more usable? I believe Google is interested in the Motorola Mobility’s Zoom business. Apple’s iPad has already created a competition against laptops, so Google will add computing power to Zoom, and challenge both, Microsoft and Apple. It can compete against Apple with Zoom or Zoom like hardware, and against Microsoft with cloud based products. If this strategy works, its Android becomes even more powerful operating system and helps its telephone partners. No wonder HP is interested in selling its PC business!
