SingleHop, a cloud-hosting company, has just launched a brand-new $30 million, 13,000-square-foot data center in Franklin Park. The space, which was built to meet increased demand for cloud computing, is teeming with security measures including patrolling by on-site by security guards 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and deployment of biometric security, including fingerprint and eye scanners.
"We're committed to meeting [the enterprise private cloud] demand at every level, which is why we have invested tens of millions of dollars and extensive planning into this new facility,” SingleHop CEO Zak Boca in a statement.
Located at Digital Realty’s Franklin Park data center campus, the facility will replace two sites: one in the Loop, and one in the Chicago suburbs. SingleHop said the larger space and network design of the new data center is more efficient, equipped with a 2,000-square-foot network operations center and boasting the capacity for up to 20,000 servers.
Modern cloud computing needs have increasingly required a "sophisticated stack of enterprise-grade gear running on high-capacity networks and drawing large quantities of power,” said Philbert Shih, founder and managing director of Structure Research, a cloud-computing research and consulting firm. “Legacy infrastructure does not always do the trick. So building from the ground up, with updated technologies and advanced redundant design to meet these complex requirements, has increasingly become table stakes."
The data center operates in concurrence with two other facilities in Phoenix and Amsterdam. SingleHop will invest $30 million in the Chicago center over the course of ten years.
