5 Chicago startup events to fill the football-shaped void in your life

The party’s over. The guac is all gone, as are all your intricate cheese- and bean-based dips. Maybe you’re happy with the outcome, and maybe you aren’t. Either way, there’s no more football for the next half year.

How can you fill that football-shaped void in your life? We recommend checking out one of these events.

Geekfest: Promote your project! with Chris Powers, February 9 at 12 noon

Day in and day out, you’re chipping away at your code to make awesome things happen. So why is it that no one is as excited about what you’re doing as you are? At this event, Chris Powers, software engineering manager at Groupon, will be talking about how you can optimize your writing style to promote your projects. Bring your laptop, because this session is interactive.

Ally Skills Workshop, February 9 at 5:30 p.m.

How can men in the tech sector respond when they notice gender discrimination and bias at the office? Or, to take it a step further back, what should men be on the lookout for if they want to become better at noticing when these things are happening? This workshop will teach participants about simple everyday things they can do to make sure their workplaces become more welcoming to geeks of any gender.

MATTER Workshop: Working With Physicians & Providers – How to Stay Legal, February 10 at 9:30 a.m.

If you’re working on tech in the health sector, you know it’s different from most other fields in business — from stricter data protection and reporting requirements, to ethical guidelines on gifts and discounts. Join Ericka Adler, adjunct professor of law at DePaul and contributing writer to the law section of Physicians Practice, in a discussion about the pitfalls to avoid in dealing with doctors.

Walk The Plank: Pitch Training Workshop, February 11 at 1 p.m.

Your pitch can be the difference between landing a massive round and gaining traction, and your startup’s ending up dead in the water. But what are the specific skills you need to commandeer the stage and captivate your audiences? In this workshop series, you’ll learn about storytelling and how to use it to create a more effective pitch. And at the end of the day, you’ll deliver your pitch and receive in-depth feedback.

MakeOffices Launch Party, February 11 at 6 p.m.

In case you missed it, there’s a new coworking space in town. If you’re curious about the new digs, this event is your chance to see what the hype is all about. Catered by Umami Burger and Parlor Pizza, among others, giveaways at this launch party includes free office space.
