Chicago Ideas Week Announces the 2013  Bluhm/Helfand Social Innovation Fellowship

For the third year, Chicago Ideas Week (CIW), the annual seven-day event intended to provoke deep connections and inspire new ideas among innovators around the world, will partner with the Bluhm/Helfand Social Innovation (BHSI) Fellowship. Created by philanthropists and entrepreneurs Leslie Bluhm and David Helfand, the BHSI Fellowship honors three outstanding individuals who have developed innovative for-profit and not-for-profit ventures that address social needs to participate at CIW and contributes $10,000 to their venture. The event will take place between October 14 and October 20, 2013.

About the Fellowship

Each BHSI fellow will have an opportunity to:

  • Speak at Chicago Ideas Week. Fellows present at CIW, which brings over 25,000 attendees together with leading innovators, entrepreneurs and intellectuals.
  • Engage with big thinkers. Fellows will have several small group meetings with prominent business and political leaders.
  • Conduct one-on-one strategic meetings. Leslie Bluhm and David Helfand work closely with each fellow to develop a customized itinerary of actionable meetings with potential funders, partners and mentors.
  • Connect with CIW speakers. Fellows have unlimited access to CIW speakers.

  • Social innovators 35 years and under can apply for the fellowship online at www.chicagoideas.com/bhsi between now and June 6.
  • The 2013 Fellows will be announced in mid-August. People of all ages can submit their nominations for potential fellows here.

2012 Fellows

In 2012, fellows met with influencers including former Mayor Richard M. Daley, TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel, Founder & CEO of Pencils of Promise Adam Braun, Groupon Co-Founder and Executive Chairman Eric Lefkofsky and Ariel Investments’ Mellody Hobson.

Past Bluhm/Helfand Social Innovation Fellows have been honored by the Clinton Global Initiative, featured as CNN Heroes and accepted into the Unreasonable Institute, among many other accomplishments.
