With a career at GrubHub you can order your cake and eat it, too!
We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our fast growing Operations team. The Operations team is charged with coordinating data-driven decision making across GrubHub’s business operations with particular focus on modeling, optimizing, and reporting on our delivery logistics. This is a new team within GrubHub, and we are still making initial investments in developing our core models and reporting infrastructure in the context of a rapidly evolving business.
As a Data Scientist, you will initially be focused on designing and building our key reporting pipelines to nontechnical consumers as well as ad-hoc analysis. As these pipelines become automated and shift into maintenance mode we expect the candidate to take on more complex analysis and modeling projects, and there is also the opportunity to build skills around “data infrastructure” (cluster computing, warehouses, production pipelines, etc.) as well as more conventional software engineering. Despite initial focus on ETL tasks, the candidate will be included in discussions and team work on more complex data science (machine learning) problems solving business issues, improving GrubHub’s performance vs. competitors.
Data in our world is complex, noisy, and dispersed across many sources, and the role’s key responsibility is to assemble it, make sense of it, and build a set of interactive reports according to business requirements. This task will involve working closely with other members of our group to formulate metrics that supply a concise picture of how we are performing, and will require developing a deep understanding of our business dynamics. It will also require understanding and working with the models that are being developed in our group, and conveying all of this information effectively and at a level of quality suitable for consumption by GrubHub’s leadership.
Responsibilities:
Design & build key reporting pipelines to nontechnical consumers
Complex data analysis and modeling projects, as assigned
Build a set of interactive reports according to business requirements
Proactively acquire knowledge about business processes and identify possible improvements by data/prediction
Acquire necessary data for models from internal stakeholders, external services and data providers
Iterate on predictive models from quick PoC to show value added and, finally, full production roll-out
Collaborate with other Data Scientists with regard to sharing best practices and peer review process
Requirements:
Demonstrated experience analyzing complex data to solve practical business problems
Excellent SQL and data-related programming skills, most importantly extraction, cleaning, and transformation across various data sources -- language does not matter
Excellent communication and data presentation skills
Strong business acumen and entrepreneurial mindset
Proficiency in Excel and similar BI tools (e.g. Tableau)
Good command of statistics
Ability to work cross functionally with various team members
Preferred skills:
Tableau
Python
D3
