Front-End Developer - Chicago, IL

About the Company

Trunk Club (trunkclub.com) was started to solve a simple problem – shopping for clothes in stores or online just doesn’t work for most people. It’s overwhelming, inconvenient, and takes way too much time. With Trunk Club, men and women discover awesome clothes that are perfect for them without ever having to go shopping. We combine top brands, expert service, and unparalleled convenience to deliver a highly personalized experience that helps people look their best and saves them time.

We start by scouring the planet for the very best in men’s and women’s apparel, curating an ever-evolving assortment of pieces from our favorite designers. With the best inventory anywhere as our point of departure, an expert on our team hand-selects a trunk of items based on each customer’s needs and tastes. They keep what they love and send the rest right back to us. In addition to this, we offer a custom clothing program in which clients can create outfits from scratch. Since the garments are custom-made to members specifications, you can design exactly what you want, as opposed to settling for something you almost love.

Our team is based in Chicago, Washington, DC, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Charleston, & Boston. We have grown from four to over 1,200 since starting out in December 2009. We're actively looking to find amazing people to join our team. Are you interested?

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced web designer or front-end developer who can create beautiful experiences, landing pages and emails. The front-end developer is a hands on role within the design team. You will be expected to design and build out the HTML, CSS and some minimal Javascript.

This is a great opportunity for problem solvers, who are comfortable working with ambiguity and enjoy the process of creative exploration and building functional prototypes. A creative, tech-savvy front-end developer will have the opportunity to make a real impact on the business and increase their knowledge of conversion testing, usability and end-to-end user experience design. This role will work closely with our UI Engineering team to create and uphold style standards across the site.

What you’d work on:

  • Develop new user-facing marketing communications, including emails and landing pages
  • Create reusable templates and maintain extensible site styles
  • Ensure the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs; QA across devices
  • Ensure that designs breakdown appropriately on supported viewport sizes
  • Optimize application for maximum speed and scalability
  • Ensure that all user input is validated before submitting to back-end
  • Work closely with the visual and product design team
  • Collaborate well with other team members and stakeholders
  • Maintain our live design style guide

What your background might look like:

  • Proficient understanding of web markup, including HTML5, CSS3
  • Basic understanding of server-side CSS pre-processing platforms, such as LESS and SASS
  • Proficient understanding of github
  • Good understanding of design principles, grid layout and typography -- with a portfolio to prove it
  • Proficient understanding of cross-browser and device compatibility issues and ways to work around them.
  • Good understanding of SEO principles and ensuring that application will adhere to them.
  • Plus if you have an understanding of Statamic and/or Responsys

Please DO NOT apply if:

  • You'd feel like a fish out of water without a well-defined traditional corporate structure
  • You're accustomed to using the phrase "it's not part of my job description"

Please DO apply if:

  • You think ChatOps is a great way for cross-team engineer collaboration
  • You’ve got a ton of experience but are willing to continue to grow and learn on the job
  • You're a closer - not a manager, a coordinator, or an idea person - but someone who loves to get stuff done, and done well (done means in production)
  • You are a “go-to” person because you're reliable, creative, resourceful, a good decision maker, and generally one of the most capable people amongst your peers
  • You're articulate, persuasive, and a good listener
  • Your friends and former employers would gush about you and your awesomeness
