Job Description

“Jack of all Trades. Master of Several. And Ready to Learn More.”

Do visions of getting lost in another dead-end IT support role dance in your head? Speaking strictly on the record (we want our competitors to know we are competing for your talent), this is nothing more than “a back room-type” role in the same way that the principal engineer in a nuclear reactor facility is nothing more than “a back room-type” role. Let that sink in then read on.

Your directive is simple: “just make it work,” like the electricity or water in your home. This job is about software. This job is about ensuring that the entire company has the software systems it need to deliver our products. The person we hire must be as smart as our architects and scientists. No exception will make it through our doors. Of course, we expect to pay handsomely for top tier talent like you. (Not to worry. The executives of Aginity are very smart, too).

Responsibilities

  1. Learning a complex system fast.
  2. Enthusiastically chasing down a problem to resolution, with malice toward none and charity for all.
  3. Running rigorous POCs to kill or bless a solution.
  4. Architecting and ruthlessly implementing the best solution.
  5. Telling your colleagues that you successfully made it “just work.”
  6. Enjoying your favorite frosty beverage at the end of the day.

Desired Skills and Experience

Are we right for you? Let’s decide together.

You must have a four-year degree and five to eight years of experience implementing and managing the kinds of tools we list below. The right person for us relishes the learning challenge and career opportunity embedded in that statement. In the list below we do not enumerate all the skills and knowledge which will be relevant for the role in the coming years. The right person for the job can abstract whether she or he might be the right person for the job. If you’re smart you will do fine.

You must excel at:

  1. All-purpose coding. SQL is a must but we also want Apex, PHP, bash. Beyond that all additional coding experience could be handy. This is not primarily an application development role. However, it contains lots of coding in the form of very advance report writing, digging into and modifying Salesforce at the code level and so on. The rock stardom possible here is not being a whiz in any single technology but being highly adept in many.
  2. Installing, configuring, coding, then driving adoption of the software applications required to support a complex operation like Aginity
  3. Diagnosing software environmental behavioral problems
  4. Forming vendor relationships
  5. Analyzing business information system needs
  6. Interpreting inadequate documentation
  7. Fighting your way through immature software
  8. Documenting results and processes for your colleagues
You must know things like:
  1. Reporting tools. Microsoft Reporting Services but the more you have, the better you look.
  2. Business software systems needs analysis
  3. Database setup and connections with some sql coding for good measure
  4. Administering middleware (IIS, Tomcat) and Windows / .NET
  5. A robust toolbox of web development tools
You may have held titles like:
  1. Software Engineer
  2. Systems Developer
  3. Application Developer
  4. All-Purpose Developer
Here is a sampling of the IT tools that might be in your purview if you accept this role. We do not require that you arrive with everything in this list. We’ll make a heuristic judgment on whether or not your particular mix works for the present. We’ll asses your overall intellectual capacity to grow with us in the future. Naturally, we know and hope you will judge us with a similarly critical and comprehensive scope.
  1. Concur
  2. IIS
  3. Apache
  4. NGINX
  5. MySQL
  6. QuickBookS
  7. SalesForce
  8. SharePoint
  9. SQL Server 2008/2012
  10. SQL Server Reporting Services - SSRS
  11. SQL Server Integration Services - SSIS
  12. Wordpress CMS
About Aginity

Aginity is a software development company whose analytic hub powers the entire enterprise. We continue to build our engineering team in Evanston, Illinois. Our flagship product, Amp, enjoys a growing customer base that is hungry for features.

Amp is a new category of software at the intersection of big data and analytics. Amp empowers data scientists, business data users, IT and executives to design, publish, use and reuse, “analytics."

We are small enough that there are no weeds in which to hide and every person’s contribution counts. We are growing like a weed but financially as solid and handsome as a polished piece of fine Italian marble—you can fittingly call this a “ground-floor” opportunity led by entrepreneurs who have built successful companies. We reward well each one of our top performers.

We are collaborative professionals and business technologists but most of the time we’re in blue jeans, we love what we do, and we laugh a lot.

We are curious and creative. We treasure our ability to collaborate with a team to solve complex analytic and technical challenges.

Aginity Inc provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, or sexual orientation.
