THE JELLYVISION LAB NEEDS AN AMAZING PLATFORM ENGINEER

Founded by the creator of the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® game series, The Jellyvision Lab, Inc. creates virtual teachers, advisors, and salespeople who make online learning and decision making delightful.  In all that we do, our goal is to make complex topics simple and boring material interesting, using a combination of great design, unexpectedly funny content, and serious technology.  Of all the virtual people Jellyvision has created, the tallest and least afraid of bears is ALEX®, the virtual benefits counselor (www.meetalex.com). ALEX helps companies talk their employees through the tricky choices they’ll have to make, like picking a health insurance plan, deciding how much to put in the 401(k), or whether they might want extra life insurance. Our customers love ALEX because he helps their employees figure out what’s best for their personal situations, which, in turn, saves our customers a boat-load of time and money - everybody wins! As we sell more and more of ALEX, we need more and more non-virtual (i.e., real life) people to keep the product amazing. That’s where you come in.

THAT'S LOVELY... BUT WHAT'S THE JOB?

The platform team monitors the world for alien activity from our helicarrier…errh…rather, we build the portfolio of  services that form the foundation for every Jellyvision product. We spend a lot of time thinking about scalable web APIs, analytics data processing pipelines, data modeling, and building internal tools that allow us to create hundreds of complex, client-specific interactive web applications each year.

As the newest member of the team, you will be responsible for designing systems, refining requirements, building/testing features, and all of the other fun things that are part of a software development lifecycle. You may be designing a new system, evaluating 3rd party solutions, building the next evolution Jellyvision platform, or shepherding a production release. We have systems in PHP and Ruby, with a focus on building new systems in Ruby. For data storage we use both relational databases and NOSQL solutions.

SO WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

First and foremost, we’re looking for someone who loves the challenge of building clean system interfaces, designing flexible data models, and scaling services to handle hundreds of requests a second. You should be capable of identifying and employing “in the box” tools when available, but should also be able to engineer enterprise quality tools from scratch when necessary. Every day is about learning something new, so we need someone who isn’t afraid to jump into a new technology and ask questions in order to build something great.

Data and security are serious business for us, which means that we’re looking for someone with experience with industry best practices when it comes to authentication, sessions, encryption, data modeling, and data validation. You will be involved in optimizing databases, running ad-hoc queries and reports, and working on systems that extract insights from our data. You will also be responsible for reviewing others' code and designs and understanding the impact your work has on security and privacy.

Above all, you’re going to learn a lot; that’s gotta be something you want in a job. We’ll support you in your endeavors, but we really relish seeing engineers who have a passion for learning and improvement throughout their careers, and we’re going to expect that passion from whomever we hire.

AND IN TERMS OF EXPERIENCE?

A degree is awesome, but we’re more interested in hearing about your experience working with distributed web and data applications. We are looking for candidates with solid (2+ years) experience as an application engineer. Experience as a DevOps engineer or collaborating with a DevOps team is a bonus. We're looking for someone with experience designing and building APIs, web services, data systems, and tools.

We use Amazon Web Services to host our web applications and our code bases are mostly based on Ruby and PHP. For data, we use a mix of relational and NoSQL data stores. Having experience with the technologies in our stack is great, but we are most interested in finding the right people – so if you can’t check off every box on that list, that’s ok if you’re a self-guided learner and want to learn.

WHAT ABOUT THOSE NOT-TECHNICAL, BUT EQUALLY IMPORTANT SKILLS?

We’re looking for folks with:
