Under the broad direction of the Program and Instructional Design Manager, the Senior Instructional Designer provides industry leading design expertise for the development of online courses and programs that facilitate effective pedagogy, meaningful student-centered learning, and reliable multi-domain assessment. Responsibilities include analysis, design, development, and implementation of new digital learning assets and course materials; proactive consultation with subject matter experts to identify and obtain objectives and content; content development; and collecting feedback to evaluate and refine course design. 

The Senior Instructional Designer position requires advanced knowledge and experience in the area of instructional design and online learning to provide thought leadership and insight in the creation of industry-leading course design and user experience. Ability to assess offerings to identify improvements, interpret instructional needs, identify appropriate solutions and look for opportunities for innovation is essential. The position serves as a resource and mentor to Instructional Designers and interfaces with faculty, key stakeholders and academic technology professionals. Ability to influence others through education and persuasion on the application or interpretation of standards or principles and create meaningful business relationships is required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Analyze, design, develop, and implement online courses in conjunction with faculty and subject matter experts using student centric principles and interactive e-learning models. Manage multiple instructional design projects at a time.
  • Provide design expertise and thought leadership to support instructional design team and ensure quality and consistency across the online catalog.
  • Assess existing program offerings to identify revisions, improvements, effectiveness, and look for opportunities for innovation.
  • Serve as a resource and provide guidance to faculty in the development/revision of outcome-based curriculum and assessment.
  • Identify and integrate new technology while leveraging available resources within the learning management system in the ongoing design and delivery of programs to maximize the learner experience.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks on team projects and provide constructive feedback.
  • Research trends in the digital learning area and stay abreast of cutting edge technologies, course design strategies and contemporary learning models.
  • Provide instructional technology training and consulting through in person individual and group meetings, and asynchronous workshops.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Instructional Systems, Distance Learning, eLearning or a related field, with three to five years of progressively advanced instructional design experience or an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
  • Minimum of three years of experience designing online learning instructional materials.
  • Demonstrated expertise in instructional technology and learning theories; knowledge of competency based learning approaches preferred; understanding of eLearning standards.
  • Experience supporting faculty in the design and development of technology-enabled courses in a higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with Open Educational Resources (OER), both content-based and technology-based and cloud-based educational technologies.
  • Experience working in various Learning Management Systems (e.g., Moodie, Canvas, D2L, and Blackboard).
  • HTMLS, CSS, and JavaScript along with Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, and audio/video capture programs.
  • Experience with quality assurance protocols for online courses (QM) a plus.
  • Ability to generate basic text/graphic materials in HTML format (to be assessed at Interview).
  • Ability to collaborate, persuade, gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas on significant projects, resolve conflicts, develop and sustain productive relationships.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and staff from diverse professional and academic disciplines with varying degrees of technological competence.
  • Ability to use varying styles, approaches, skills, and techniques that reflect an understanding and acceptance of the role of culture in a diverse, multicultural workplace a plus. Possess sensitivity to respond to the needs of a diverse population.
  • Strong analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Project management skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and time efficiently, exercise initiative, work independently and in a team, and work with great attention to detail.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
