Blackbox is hiring a Senior Product Designer who wants to help us build tools for independent artists, customers, and warehouses.

About Us

Blackbox is a new shipping company from the creators of Cards Against Humanity that is redefining the meaning of fulfillment.

Our mission is to help independent artists sell and ship stuff directly to their fans for a fraction of the cost and effort of doing it themselves. In addition to selling and shipping Cards Against Humanity around the globe, the technology we've built has shipped the most–backed Kickstarter game in history, sold over 10,000 Trump Bug–Out bags in under 2 hours, distributed 30,000 pieces of cow poo, and has helped our clients continue to run their successful small businesses.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Product Designer to join the design team reporting directly to the Head of Design. As part of the Blackbox product team, you'll work alongside the engineers and designers as a key contributor defining and creating software that enables our users to get their products into the hands of their customers. We're looking for someone who believes that cross–disciplinary collaboration generates the best work. This person should be humble by nature, but also have the confidence to lead a feature from concept to completion.

The ideal candidate is excited to deeply understand complicated problems and contribute to solving them. They understand that design starts with experience first, not layouts. The role also requires that the candidate be able to switch contexts between high–level design thinking and hands–on design work. We are interested in hiring well–rounded individuals who are naturally inquisitive, and passionate about learning new things and contributing to the Blackbox culture. We are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply.

This is a full–time position based in Chicago, IL, with benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, and generous vacation. We work out of our wonderful co–working space full of artists, developers, game designers, photographers, and the occasional dog.

Responsibilities

  • Be able to guide not only what the product should look and feel like, but what should be built and why.
  • Being a continuous advocate in–house for our users and their customers.
  • Synthesizing any quantitative and qualitative data and translating that in a way that helps inform a design.
  • Gathering requirements and building a shared understanding around new or updated features through a variety of methods: user flows, wireframes, high–fidelity mock–ups, etc.
  • Creating thoughtful solutions to business challenges while collaborating with other designers, engineers, and managers.
  • Championing brand standards and refining as needed across the complete product experience.
  • Taking ownership of projects from start to finish.
  • Leading meetings and facilitating group discussions.
  • Supplying engineers with any production–ready assets needed.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years experience designing usable experiences, preferably on a product team.
  • BA or BS in design or similar field.
  • An online portfolio or case studies demonstrating your experience crafting great user–centered design solutions from concept to completion.
  • Excellent communication skills (you should be able to clearly articulate your design decisions).
  • Be collaborative and able to take direction from leads. It's important to have conviction in your work, but value the feedback of your team and internal partners.
  • High attention to detail, including proven ability to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience leading design projects from requirement to production (with examples).
  • Experience designing interfaces for systems–level applications.
  • Able to be effective in a self–motivated environment and close collaboration across disciplines.
  • We are a nimble team. You must be self–motivated to gather the information you need to complete your work efficiently.
  • Familiarity with prototyping tools like: Axure, Atomic, Marvel, or InVision.
  • Experience with data visualization a plus.
