 The Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) is the nation’s flagship research organization for applying cutting-edge digital technologies to reduce the time and cost of manufacturing, strengthen the capabilities of the U.S. supply chain, and reduce production costs.  The DMDII will develop, demonstrate, deploy and commercialize digital design and manufacturing technologies across key industries.

The Digital Manufacturing Commons (DMC) is an online platform, open-source, platform designed to support collaboration within a service marketplace for digital manufacturing. Our platform is transforming American Manufacturing by making today's data analysis and collaboration tools accessible to all.

The Institute is seeking candidates for the position of Senior Software Engineer, for full-time employment in our Chicago office. 

+ Key Responsibilities:

This role is for full-stack development with a primary responsibility toward devops and cloud deployment infrastructure. This role will assist in the design & architecture as well as operational system administration of the open source Digital Manufacturing Commons software system. This role will help shape a next-generation cloud deployment architecture using state-of-the-art tools like Terraform and Kubernetes. This role will provide support and guidance to an open source community base and help leverage and manage community contributions.

+ Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop and integrate a next generation cloud deployment, monitoring, and resilience architecture.
  • Assist in the deployment and management of the multi-tiered software system, including operationalizing patch management and change control, active threat monitoring and response, and auto-balancing elastic resources.
  • Architecture and development of key features and bug fixes for the Digital Manufacturing Commons software system, especially around management of dynamic and heterogeneous software assets through a virtual machine or container strategy. This will involve software development in bash, java, javascript/angular, node, SQL, etc.
  • Help design, deploy, and maintain an open source project website and codebase including community repositories and mirrors.
  • Help build a thriving user community and open source development community.

+  Position Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or similar software degree
  • 5-7 years of experience in web development
  • Excellent technical skills with cloud computing technologies like AWS, Azure, Terraform, Kubernetes, OpenStack, etc.
  • Excellent technical skills in linux system administration and operation.
  • Good technical skills in java and javascript
  • Experience using RDBMSs like Postgres
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Hands-on, team-oriented and committed to advancement of digital manufacturing
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Strong problem solving capabilities
  • Technical training and presentation skills
  • The following are not required, but are a plus:
    • Experience with open source (especially making open source code contributions)
    • Experience in modeling tools such as Matlab, Simulink, Mathematica, Ansys, etc.
    • Experience with hardware hacking (Arduino, 3d printing, Hackerspaces, etc.)
