About the Job

UrbanBound is looking for a mid-to-senior level Software Designer to join our 3 member-strong design team.

You’ll be involved in all stages of the software development lifecycle, from product inception, through development and testing, including maintenance after the release.

The ideal candidate
  • You are perpetually curious about our users. Where do they succeed with the product? Where do they walk away? Why? Which features work as intended? Which ones confuse? Where can value be added or extracted?

  • You work well in the open.

  • You can identify, propose and monitor the product’s Key Performance Indicators. You take satisfaction when those numbers move up and to the right with each release, and you figure out why they didn’t when they don’t.

  • You understand that content is the interface. Words matter to you.

  • You’re capable of exploring user flows via wireframes, and subsequently documenting those flows in high-fidelity mockups (we use Ai and Ps) and user stories.

  • You know there are many ways to solve a problem.

  • You are comfortable presenting and defending your ideas, and capable of conducting user research tests to validate your design approaches. If you haven’t run sessions like these before, you’re willing to learn how.

  • You can take the kernel of an idea from another team member and build upon it.

  • You know how to critique in constructive ways.

  • You routinely keep up to date with the latest and greatest in the software industry.

  • You take a task and run with it, requiring little direction and oversight. You can manage your time well, sticking to deadlines, and notifying your team early if you sense an issue delivering work by the agreed-upon deadline. You pull yourself out of potential rabbit holes, staying focused on the task at hand.

  • You can provide direction to junior members of the team. You offer useful critiques and suggestions to all design team members in order to see the best ideas come to light.

  • You’re eager to work with people outside of the product team to diagnose issues, understand the challenges they face with the application, and define feature requirements.

  • You’re confident in your skillset, but you have areas in which you’d like to grow or expand your expertise.

What will you do on a typical day?

The product team operates in two week sprints. During these sprints, you may be participating in a weeklong exploratory design sprint to learn, ideate, and create a prototype of a new or existing feature. You’ll then test the prototype during 4-5 user validation sessions held at the end of the week. During a different sprint, you might have 2-3 days of heads down time to consider all angles of a design problem, after which you’ll write specifications (we like to write requirements as acceptance tests) to guide development of your resulting mockups. You’ll review other designers’ work-in-progress as well as their specifications before we deliver them to the development team. You’ll participate in twice-monthly design and engineering retrospectives and planning sessions.

Requirements
  • Love working with the best tools and people.

  • A desire to constantly be learning, and teaching.

  • 6-8 years experience building web-based products.

  • Familiarity with the challenges faced by modern web applications, and the array of solutions to those problems.

  • Experience working on an agile team.

  • Enjoy working with people in engineering, product development, sales, marketing, and customer support.

  • Great communication skills. Strong writing chops.

  • Solid Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop skills.

  • Experience writing your own HTML/CSS is a strong plus. You will generally not write code in this role, but you should know how to code the designs you create.

Education and Experience Guidelines

Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University, or equivalent experience, required.

Experience

A minimum of 6 years of software development experience.

Compensation

  • The best office technology around, including a top of the line MacBook Pro and a 27” Apple Thunderbolt Display.

  • Special UrbanBound gear awarded after your 90-day Letter Ceremony. (What’s that you ask?...You’ll have to wait and find out ;)
