 The Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) is the nation’s flagship research organization for applying cutting-edge digital technologies to reduce the time and cost of manufacturing, strengthen the capabilities of the U.S. supply chain, and reduce production costs.  The DMDII will develop, demonstrate, deploy and commercialize digital design and manufacturing technologies across key industries.

The Institute is seeking candidates for the position of Web Software Developer, for full-time employment in our downtown Chicago office.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design, installation and operation of the Digital Manufacturing Commons software system. Responsible for key development tasks on the Digital Manufacturing Commons software system.  Provide support and guidance to an open source community base.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead the deployment and management of a new web-based capability. This will involve designing and executing a cloud-based strategy for development, test, and operational environments of the Digital Manufacturing Commons software system.
  • Development of key features and bug fixes for the Digital Manufacturing Commons software system. This will involve software development in php and java.
  • Development of plugin architecture for various components of the system. In addition, development of specific plugin modules may be required.
  • Help design, deploy, and maintain an open source project website with downloadable releases, community forums, and documentation.
  • Help build a thriving user community and open source development community.

 Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or similar software degree
  • 1-5 years of experience in web development
  • Excellent technical skills in php and java programming languages
  • Experience using RDBMSs like Postgres
  • Experience using Amazon Web Services
  • Comfortable developing in linux
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Hands-on, team-oriented and committed to advancement of digital manufacturing
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Strong problem solving capabilities
  • Technical training and presentation skills
  • The following are not required, but are a plus:
    • Experience using OpenStack
    • Experience making open source code contributions
    • Experience in modeling tools such as Matlab, Simulink, Mathematica, Ansys, etc.
    • Experience with hardware hacking (Arduino, 3d printing, Hackerspaces, etc.)
