Technical Product Manager
THAT’S LOVELY, BUT WHAT’S THE JOB?
Your mission is to help plan and execute strategy and development for the ALEX platform engineering team. The platform team owns many critical services for our products – including our API services, algorithms and cost simulation, our rendering engine for PDF and email, and our infrastructure services for all our products.
Your role will be to act as the end-to-end owner of these services – so we’re looking for someone with experience building products from start to finish, as well as experience with teams building systems for a variety of use cases. The ideal candidate must be able to lead a cross-functional team through idea generation, product definition, development and launch, and should be well-versed in iterative development. Our Product team enjoys the luxury of working with world-class engineers and designers to turn great ideas into products that genuinely help people. Working in conjunction with this amazing team already hard at work on the product, the focus for this role is a holistic one to ensure that Jellyvision provides the best possible experience for both our customers and teams using these services. More specifically, your responsibilities will include:
- Leading strategy for our API services, cost-comparison algorithms, and rendering platforms to ensure we’re solving tomorrow’s problems, not just today’s.
- Facilitating and catalyzing communication between individual contributors and leaders across teams to better align their strategies and tactical choices.
- Leading product delivery as product owner through agile/scrum delivery methodology.
- Documenting and prioritizing product specifications including goals, use cases and requirements.
- Defining and tracking clear metrics as to the success of the services, and iterating on the product continuously to achieve them.
- Collaborating with sales, marketing, research, and project management teams on product implementation for features that affect end users and customers.
SO WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
All too often, the car keys. Always, world peace. But in this case, a humble, hard-working, amazing product person. You know, someone who:
- Is good with Legos. We need someone who can break an idea into bite size chunks, and prioritize them, building the product in levels to ensure we always have something deliverable.
- Is an excellent communicator – in writing and in person – to both internal and external audiences. Which means you need to be both a persuasive presenter and a world-class listener.
- Is a strategic thinker, with a side of process nerd. We need someone who can identify product market fit and how to get us to move toward it.
- Is technical. You won’t be coding the products yourself, but you’ll need to be able to understand and discuss architectural concepts, schedule tradeoffs and new opportunities with technical team members. Experience with API teams is a requirement.
- Has experience with using analytics and metrics to drive product decisions, as well as what metrics actually matter. We’re looking to iterate continuously as we learn what works and doesn’t from our users, and we need someone willing to both place bets and evaluate the results.
- Knows how to lead a diverse team of developers, QA, creative and content teams, etc. toward a common goal – delivering amazing products. You must be able to set goals and clearly communicate them to them team, inspiring the team and gaining buy-in for those goals, both short- and long-term.
- Wants to be hands-on. Everyone in the company gets down in the details. We’re not looking for a manager or just a strategist. We’re looking for someone who has the vision to plan for the product at a high level, but is also primed to play their role in the hundreds of hands-on tasks required for execution.
- Keeps your cool even when the chips are down. Especially when the chips are down.
- Has a sense of humor. It just makes you more fun to work with.
AND WHAT KINDS OF EXPERIENCE SHOULD YOU HAVE?
This is a position for someone with experience working on SaaS products – we’re looking for someone who’s been part of teams that bring software projects from idea to launch, with a hand in every stage and ultimate responsibility for the success of the product. Also important is an entrepreneurial spirit. We need someone who is a balance of smart and scrappy; math-oriented and creative; process-oriented and nimble. In terms of “ideal backgrounds,” we’re looking to see:
- 3-5 years relevant experience in product management or program management.
- Demonstrated success in working with technical, service oriented architecture developers.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams, preferably in an entrepreneurial, high-growth environment.
- Experience with compliance (PCI, PII, or HIPAA) a plus.
ANYTHING ELSE? Yes. We share a commitment to excellence and a desire to work in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere, so we only hire nice, bright, funny people who are willing to work hard. Our credo is a simple one: be helpful. And we think we can be most helpful if our workforce is as diverse in thought, perspective, and culture as the people who use our products. We are looking to add amazing folks to our team who will bring diversity across many lines, including race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability, gender identity, sex, and country of origin.
ARE THERE ANY PERKS? Yes, we love perks.
- Competitive pay, 401(k) with matching, stock options and benefits. We pay 100% of the cost of premiums for medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance for our employees (as long as you qualify for our tobacco-free discount; if you’re a tobacco user, your medical premiums will be higher than $0). We also cover a really nice chunk of the cost of premiums for spouse/dependent medical, dental and vision insurance.
- Casual dress and a flexible schedule. Come in a sweatshirt, jeans, whatever, like everyone else here.
- Creative work environment. We are lucky to work in a place that is full of intelligent, talented and innovative folks. Although most hours the place is deathly quiet (we're a focused bunch), this is punctuated with hilarious outbursts and general merriment, which makes a nice way to spend the day.
- Free food. Every week, we stock our kitchen with free healthy snack foods, and we have a catered lunch every other week to give people a reason to hang out and eat together.
- Easy transportation and lots of love for folks who bike to work. We’re really close to the North/Clybourn red line stop and the Halsted (#8) bus (right by the Apple Store and Mega Whole Foods too), and we have a transit FSA that allows you to dedicate pre-tax dollars to public transportation expenses. A number of our employees like to bike to work, so we also have bike storage, showers and lockers in the office. And for those without their own bike in the city, we offer free divvy memberships – complete with Jellyvision bike helmets you can borrow from the office.
- Did we mention our yoga class? We bring a pro instructor right to the office. Fully subsidized by Jellyvision and fully optional, btw.
- Oh! And we have a massage chair. Not just any massage chair, my friend. It’s the HumanTouch HT 5320 WholeBody™ Massage Chair. Feeling a little stiff? Sit down. Relax. Feel better? Good. Okay, back to work.
AND HOW DO I APPLY?
We look forward to hearing about you and what you do. Make sure your application includes:
- A cover letter that highlights three reasons you think you’d be great for the gig, focusing on how your past experience has prepared you for this kind of position. Writing is key to all we do, and we weigh cover letters heavily. We love a cover letter that really shows us your personality (check out our company bios to see the wide range of personalities we’ve already got in house), but don’t stress if you’re not a comedian. You don’t have to be funny. Just be yourself. We’re mostly interested in learning who you are, what you love to do, and why you’d love to do it here with us.
- Your resume
You will receive an auto-reply confirming that we've received your application.
Please know that every single application we receive is read by a real live human being. However that kind of thoughtful review takes time, so it may take us a little while to get back to you (but we will, we promise). In the meantime, NO FOLLOW UP PHONE CALLS OR EMAILS, PLEASE. It’s not that we don’t love hearing from you. It’s just that time spent responding to follow ups could be spent…well…reading your application. Please rest assured that if you received a confirmation from Recruiting Robot, we’ve got you’re application, and will get back to you really soon. We knew you’d understand.
