We at RedShelf were students not too long ago and started the company based on the idea that textbooks shouldn’t cost a fortune or weigh a ton. They should be affordable and easily accessible for everyone to use. Our top priority at RedShelf is to help transition the learning community from print to digital course materials and be advocates for students everywhere.

Over the past four years, RedShelf experienced 400% YOY growth, and we’re looking to add a talented and passionate Vice President of Engineering to assist running our closely-knit agile development team.The VP of Engineering will be responsible for overseeing actives of the development team and challenged with creating an environment that maximizes developer’s engagement, enjoyment and quality output. The idea candidate will bring exceptional leadership skills, broad scope of software technologies and enthusiasm to a collaborative environment.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Manage technical, complex and large scale project to develop, maintain and enhance applications
  • Develops new processes as it pertains to writing good code and following technical best practices
  • Manage productivity, efficiency and effectiveness for a growing team of software developers
  • Proactively update stakeholders and maintain open communication
  • Cultivate a culture that is collaborative, engaging and drives internal motivation
  • Develop and implement training initiatives for the development team
  • Collaborate with HR on recruitment and on-boarding efforts
  • Collaborate proactively with Operations team to cultivate DevOps mindset
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by management

Requirements:

  • Minimum 15 years of experience within and working via the software industry
  • Three to five (3 – 5) years of experience managing direct reports within a fast-moving, web-oriented development environment.
  • Advanced experience with Agile or Scrum methodology
  • History of working independently with little to no direction
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders including senior leadership.
  • Track record of balancing multiple priorities simultaneously with the ability to adapt to the changing needs of the business while meeting deadlines.
  • Highly collaborative, identifies themselves as a people-person and familiarity with basic concepts of human behavior and how to influence people
  • Organized and possess the ability to run an efficient and productive meeting

Technology Requirements:

  • Five plus (5+) years of experience working with Python Language (2.7)
  • Experience using Django is preferred - Flask or Pyramid is also desirable
  • Five plus (5+) years of experience with Javascript Experience
  • Two plus (2+) years of experience working with Javascript framework (Angular, React, Mithril)

Other Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Experience with Ember, Celery, RabbitMQ, Elasticsearch, Redis, or PostgresSQL
  • Experience with Quality Assurance, project management or business analytics
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the advances in higher educational software, course materials, and digital publishing
  • Background and/or experience in educational technology and/or publishing
  • Comfort and/or experience in a startup environment
