We’re Looking for Staff Reporters

Built In’s editorial team reaches millions of tech professionals with in-depth reporting on the technology sector. We are currently in the process of expanding our coverage of fintech, robotics and hardware, and the B2B software sector, and we are hiring features reporters to take on each of these beats. These staff reporters will collaborate closely with their editors and our SEO team to make Built In a one-stop destination for anyone looking to understand their areas of coverage. You’ll do that through a combination of guides, longform explainers and enterprise stories that explore emerging trends and interesting developments within your beat.

For these positions, we are looking for reporters who seek a deeper understanding of how these technologies work, and who delight in explaining them to a lay audience. Your job will be to develop a knowledgeable source network and write compelling stories. Prior experience covering any of the above subjects is a plus, but not required.

You’ll join an ambitious editorial team with reporting and editing experience from publications like the Atlantic, Pacific Standard, Wired, Vox Media and Wirecutter. This team, which is primarily responsible for building and retaining our audience of tech professionals, reports to the VP of Growth and it is independent of our branded content team.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Pitch, report and write enterprise feature stories, and contribute to our growing library of explainers.
  • Follow debates and emerging trends in your area of coverage and use the insights you gain to develop stories that will keep our audience engaged.
  • Collaborate with other reporters on the features team in monthly story feedback sessions.
  • Develop an extensive network of subject matter experts, and work with the marketing team to distribute your published stories.

What You Need

  • Experience reporting multi-source feature stories on complicated topics, between 2,000-4,000 words in length.
  • An interest in startups and emerging technologies.
  • A knack for breaking down complex, nuanced concepts and making them approachable through strategic use of examples, hypotheticals and other storytelling devices.
  • An eye for detail and a collaborative mindset, and an ability to build rapport with sources quickly.
