This role assists in the day-to-day guidance of the user documentation verticals. Working closely with the Documentation Manager, this role is responsible for monitoring personnel, staff performance, documentation deliverables, and work requirements. This role is a “working manager”, meaning they contribute to the documentation effort as well as fulfill the management responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Associate, Technical, and Senior Writers; hire and onboard direct reports as necessary
  • Work closely with Development and other groups that are creating features in need of documentation
  • Coordinate the evolution of the user documentation site and seek opportunities for improvement
  • Oversee the delivery of documentation materials to meet specified deadlines
  • Monitor Technical Writers’ work to identify and implement areas of improvement
  • Provide day to day guidance to reports
  • Maintain expert product and industry knowledge
  • Work independently or with team members to develop and roll out new user documentation initiatives
  • Run a minimum of monthly one-on-one meetings
  • Participate in management initiatives, like the Content team leadership meetings, release management activities, performance coaching and quarterly feedback, team talent reviews, and end of year reviews for direct reports

Qualifications

  • Expert technical writing skills and knowledge of common software used in this role
  • Basic familiarity with source control products, such as Git
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • A working knowledge of MadCap Flare is desired, but not required
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with evolving project requirements and priorities
  • Ability to juggle multiple concurrent projects of various sizes and topics
  • Highly committed, flexible, productive, and team-oriented
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a technical documentation role or equivalent

Supervisory Expectations

  • Directly manages the Associate, Technical, and Senior Writers. Conducts monthly one-on-ones and handles all personnel items (PTO, flex time, etc.)
  • Assists Documentation Manager with documentation team roadmap
  • Manages an evergreen task backlog
  • Manages team projects and allocates resources
  • Creates and maintains documentation release project board
