What You’ll Do

As a Manager, Visual Design you will direct the visual aspect of Uptake’s branded user experience across all products while managing and mentoring a small team of visual designers.

Your understanding of target audience needs, product requirements, and business strategy results in high-quality, user-centric, interactive products. You have a deep appreciation of communication design and how content can be used to improve user experience, user processes, and the services delivered to the user. Your leadership will help build a platform that supports workflows across multiple industries and ensure our users capture the immense value from our solutions.

As Manager, Visual Design you will partner and collaborate with other design managers, interaction designers, user researchers, and with the content strategy, data visualization, product, and technology teams.

Some of the Things You May Find Yourself Doing

  • Defining a unique look and feel for Uptake’s branded product experiences
  • Creating a systematic visual design language to create cohesive user experiences
  • Directing visual design based on best practices and user and client feedback
  • Leading creative direction as we build highly usable, responsive, on-brand, forward-thinking visual designs
  • Ensuring that all products live up to the highest quality of Uptake’s visual standards as you collaborate through the entire design process, from discovery to implementation to design QA
  • Advocating for and consistently communicating visual design philosophy and standards across the organization; defending design decisions and articulating design rationale
  • Collaborating with Product and Technology to develop and improve design process in product development
  • Contributing to brainstorming sessions, rapid-iteration and sketching
  • Assessing and estimating work for the team as you handle multiple priorities, meeting tight deadlines in a rapidly changing environment
  • Maintaining project momentum and keeping projects and the team on track

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in graphic design, visual communications, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years years in-depth knowledge and experience of user interface design with software applications and mobile devices
  • Demonstrated command of visual design principles, especially in typography, iconography, information hierarchy, responsive design, and data visualization
  • Experience implementing visual design systems to support pattern reuse across a range of products in an iterative software development environment
  • Knowledge of web-based technologies and mobile operating systems and their impact on the feasibility of design solutions
  • Experience working within a user-centered design process and transforming user findings in to industry leading user experiences
  • Experience in developing and scaling a team
  • Consistent track record in delivering products
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary UX and/or product teams (motion, interaction, UX research, engineering, UX writer) on technical implementation
  • An in-depth understanding of HTML, capabilities of web browsers; experience with Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and industry standard design tools
  • Experience working with Agile methodologies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing complex visual systems for web-based applications and tools, especially solving for enterprise software
  • Demonstrated expert typographic skills including experience with web based typography
  • Experience in time-based animations in web applications and tools
  • Strong knowledge in visual/interactive/motion design trends
  • Knowledge of designing intuitive site functionality, interaction, site architecture, and navigation
  • Experience mentoring, directing, and developing visual designers

Location

We are located in River North just right off the Chicago Brown Line stop. We also provide you with a free shuttle service to/from Ogilvie and Union.
