Shedd aquarium’s technology team is looking to add an application developer to our small, cross-functional team.  The Application Developer role is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of custom and delivered software, including sheddaquarium.org, developed in support of Shedd’s mission to spark compassion, curiosity and conservation for the aquatic animal world.

This individual works closely with the Director of Application Development, Senior Application Developers, and other team members to develop new products, features, and enhancements as well as troubleshoot software. The Application Developer will help develop recommendations on the use of new and emerging technologies where appropriate.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate commitment to Shedd’s vision, mission, and values.  
  • Develop/Maintain in-house custom and third party developed/packaged applications.
  • Develop/Maintain reports to support business operations.
  • Attend operational meetings as necessary.
  • Clearly and effectively communicate project status, progress, and/or delays.
  • Engage in unconventional thinking/creative problem solving to address client needs and provide high-value service.
  • Alert colleagues to emerging technologies or applications and the opportunities to integrate them into operations and activities.
  • Develop innovative, reusable technology tools.
  • Learn/Code in different languages/frameworks as necessary.
  • Write test cases, unit tests, regression tests.
  • Assess the advantages and disadvantages of new frameworks and technologies.
  • Identify inefficiencies and offer innovative solutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience would be accepted in lieu of a degree

Experience:  
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in design, development, and support of custom and packaged software. Experience with the following is required:

  • Ruby/Ruby on Rails
  • React
  • Automated tests/rspec
  • HTML/HTML5/CSS/XHTML
  • Javascript/JQuery
  • Docker
  • PostgreSQL/PL/pgSQL
  • Git/GitHub
  • REST APIs
  • Experience with the .NET framework and C#.

Preferred/Beneficial to have:

  • SQL/T-SQL – scripting, stored procedures, custom views, tables, SSRS
  • Android/iOS programming
  • Tessitura
  • Sass or other CSS pre-processor
