Principal Software Engineer

About the Principal Software Engineer position:

Software Engineers at Fixer serve three primary sets of users: our customers, our fixers, and our operations team. For our customers we strive to build products that are simple to use and provide clarity and transparency through the entire experience.

For fixers, we aim to maximize the benefits of technology for users operating in a fast-paced field environment. We provide and collect crucial information at the right moment so our fixers always feel supported by the rest of the organization.

For our operations team, we provide tools that give insight, visibility, and control over our daily operations. Whether that is understanding the state of our team during a busy afternoon, or planning the optimal deployment of our fixers for an upcoming week, we work constantly with the operations team to improve their ability to serve our customers and fixers.

We are seeking additional team members to help us design, develop, and roll out new products and features. Our development process is lean and we release software multiple times a day. We review all code deployed both for quality control and as a way to learn from each other. Our API layer is built with Kotlin + Spring over a Postgres database. Our client applications are written in React and React-Native. If you know these tools - awesome! If not - we will help you learn.

Working as a Software Engineer at Fixer you will:

  • Create new software products to meet the needs of our users
  • Write full-stack code - from the database through the API and on to our client applications
  • Help maintain the health and performance of our platform
  • Bring fresh ideas for how our technology team can improve
  • Work with team members in product, operations, and marketing to build great products and a great company
  • Work directly with users to understand their perspective and gather feedback on new features
  • Be a foundational member forming a culture of respect and excellence

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years building software products
  • Ability to work independently, while knowing when to ask for help
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable working in an environment that prefers collaborative interactions between individuals to formal tool-driven processes
  • Ability to work directly with users to understand perspective and gather feedback
  • Experience working with relational databases
  • Experience writing native mobile applications is a plus
  • A background working in a startup environment is a plus

About Fixer:

Fixer was founded in May 2017 by Mike Evans (co-founder, GrubHub) and a handful of carefully chosen GrubHub product, operations, engineering and marketing veterans. Fixer brings a modern technological approach to a highly fragmented, traditional industry, and helps urban homeowners, apartment dwellers and landlords get their home repair and maintenance projects done. Currently operating in Chicago, Fixer is unparalleled in providing friendly and professional home repair and maintenance service with transparent hourly pricing, easy online booking and mobile payments to work with customers to get projects done right.

Fixer has a firm commitment to providing exemplary customer experiences (through technology, and professional service) and to creating strong full-time employment opportunities for men and women in the building trades in the communities we serve. Our Fixers are full-time employees receiving salaries and benefits - not independent contractors - who participate in ongoing technical and professional training aligned to our mission.

Fixer has grown by leaps and bounds in its first year of operation. In 2018, we are launching our first mobile app, while continuing to hire men and women and build our training programs. We will be expanding our market footprint aggressively very soon.
