NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking passionate problem-solvers excited by new challenges who enjoy working on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. In this position the Programmer will be called upon to apply their computer science expertise and skills to create innovative solutions addressing key social issues such as early childhood education, criminal justice, economics, and labor. The Programmer will be expected to quickly and independently pick up and apply new skills while working in a team environment.

DEPARTMENT: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

NORC's Information Technology program provides technology services to our staff and clients. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working on a team with developers, engineers, researchers, and statisticians to develop new data-oriented technologies and software solutions for collecting and analyzing data
  • Working with web service APIs or developing novel web scraping programs to pull data from a variety of online sources
  • Manipulating, transforming, and analyzing large volumes of data
  • Maintaining, customizing, and enhancing existing systems
  • May perform hands-on testing in a project setting
  • Responsible for system set-up, software customization, application and data support for existing systems, and writing data preparation and report programs
  • Participation in design and architecture sessions
  • Set up, test, implement and support non-complex applications in existing systems
  • Perform simple data maintenance tasks on system development projects, will write subroutines or sections of new systems and investigate problems reported by system users, will resolve simple problems and refer more complex problems to senior programmer or project manager
  • Assist in training of system users and in preparation of documentation

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Facility in Python programming and web development using the Django framework in a Linux environment
  • Familiarity with web UI development using JavaScript, CSS, and HTML
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL database technology
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in computer science, mathematics, statistics, analytic public policy or sociology, or related field
  • 0 to 2 years of relevant experience including programming, testing, and database concept 
  • Development of production quality code for assembling, processing, and analyzing data from disparate sources to enable inferences of significance to the design or evaluation of policies or programs
  • Experience with front-end web technologies (e.g., jQuery, CSS/LESS, Vue.js, Jinja2) preferred
  • Experience working with various social media APIs (e.g., Twitter, Facebook) preferred
  • Data visualization tools/methods preferred
  • Interest in social science research preferred
  • Analytic skills involving topic modeling, natural language processing, and machine learning preferred
