Groupon is looking for Senior Messaging Engineer in our Production Ops team.

Responsibilities

• Lead and perform problem recognition and analyze the root cause of messaging issues across all protocols (smtp, smpp, mobile push, mta-haproxy) engaging with their direct supervisor as required.

• Recommend configuration changes based on acquired data to resolve delivery issues.  This would include adaptive delivery, host level and domain level changes.

• Lead efforts on new product architecture and design decisions.

• Participate in cross-functional efforts on collaboration in region to identify issues and increase inbox placement

• Liaise with the below teams on Messaging & Delivery Operations

  • Messaging & Delivery Operations Team (MTA)

  • Messaging Operations Team

  • Deliverability Data Team

  • Rocketman Team

  • Push Marketing

  • EDW

  • Netops Team

  • Sys-eng

  • Other teams as required

  • Vendors as required

• Engage and collaborate with email ops and deliverability teams to ensure optimal server performance and stability to maximize uptime and delivery rates.

• Provide deployment reviews as required for messaging deployments in region or as assigned

• Be available for a rotating on call schedule

Requirements

• Appropriate technical background (bachelor in computer science, engineering or similar required).

• 8+ years as a system administrator or messaging engineer.

• 6+ years in a development role pushing new features/code in a messaging environment

• Moderate level experience with all push notifications variants and SMS delivery operations.

• Extensive (6-10 years) experience working with a large, production installation (+1 billion annual messages) with strict SLA and uptime requirements.

• Extensive experience (6-10 years) with server deployment or tooling packages such as Chef, Puppet, or Ansible.

• Extensive experience (6-10 years) with commercial MTA platforms/products -- PowerMTA, Momentum, etc.

• Expert level understanding of DNS & how it affects delivery

• Moderate level understanding of networking concepts and how it affects delivery

• Willing to participate in on-call rotation

• Ability to adapt communication content, message, and terminology based on the audience expressing ideas in a succinct manner using plain language

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision to reach team goals and proactively seek assistance as required

• Flexible with changing priorities in a fast-paced environment

• BSCS or equivalent work experience
