Sr. Manager Engineering – The Engineering Lead is a role designation. An Engineering Lead is responsible for the overall delivery of software capabilities within a cross-functional agile team. An Engineering Lead works with teams of engineers, analysts, and support functions to build product features within a scalable architecture for our customers. In addition to strong technical acumen, the Engineering Lead must have the ability to work across teams, create and cultivate a strong relationship with peered Product Manager, and have be able to work in multiple phases of the SDLC from Conceptualization to Operations. They must support their teams through the use of practical agile software development methods, backed by a strong understanding of software engineering principles.

When operating as an Engineering Lead, they must drive technical strategy and architectural vision for their products, and coordinate with Architects to ensure the solution being developed aligns to the overall architecture and standards. They serve as the point person for technical decisions and must stay abreast of advancements in technology.


Key Activities

Scope of work:

 

Manages day-to-day engineering approach and work product for one or more teams.

Assesses necessary skill sets and platform knowledge to deliver engineering objective. 

Provides recommendation for resourcing and/or training plans. 

Ensures there is a balance capacity against demands and focus on continued professional development opportunities for the team.

Work with Product Management and Business Stakeholders to deliver software on collaborative timelines. 

Provides Engineering context to Product, Project, or Portfolio Managers to support release planning activities and status reporting

Technical approach: Vets technical solutions as proposed by team members, escalates questions to Engineering leadership or Solution Architecture as needed

Works with Engineering Management and Solution Architecture to align broader technology decisions with the effective delivery of quality software, through such tools as languages, architectures, and design patterns.

Coordinates activities with other teams to ensure team members have tools they need to complete their work.

Removes technical and operational barriers to improve team efficiency, effectiveness, and happiness. Oversight of work product: Ensures work delivered by the team is of high quality, scalability, and security

They confirm that all technical aspects of the solution are properly documented and transitioned to support teams.

Performs code reviews for the most critical, high-impact changes

Delivers work product in the form of completed development or business analysis and user requirement creation; sets the bar for quality of work product on the team.

Facilitates technical problem resolution for issues within the team’s scope of responsibility; ensures the proper team members are engaged and collaborates with other Engineering Team Leads and related subject matter experts.

Provides guidance to more junior team members; Builds an atmosphere of measured risk-taking, creates and environment which promotes Psychological Safety, supports others through encouragement, feedback and provides opportunity to innovate.

Coordinate activities across development teams and ensure team members have the best tools to complete their work. They work to remove any technical barriers in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness of their staff.

Requirements

  • 5 – 8 years development experience
  • 7+ IT industry experience
  • 5+ years team leadership experience
  • 5+ years working in an Agile environment
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience in multiple IT disciplines
  • Strong communication and leadership capabilities
