Overview

Primary accountability to the Chicago editorial department. Responsible for building the next iteration of Chicagomag.com, working on editorial web design initiatives, developing advertiser-related microsites, and assisting with advertising strategies for our website, tablet and mobile apps and e-newsletters.

 

The ideal candidate will be a developer with full-stack experience, but developers with only front-end experience will be considered. Strong HTML/CSS and PHP skills are necessary, as there is a lot of design work to be done, and the new website will be launched on Wordpress. The candidate must have prior experience building Wordpress themes and plugins. The ideal candidate would also have experience with Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop).

Responsibilities

  • Building the next iteration of Chicagomag.com, to be hosted on Wordpress with support from GTXcel
  • Maintenance and improvements to the Chicago and SPLASH Wordpress codebases
  • Design major editorial features for web, including cover stories
  • Program and design advertiser and/or promotional microsites
  • Design event microsites and other miscellaneous online content as necessary
  • Administer and be technical point of contact for newsletter and email marketing system, on IBM Silverpop
  • Data collection and analysis of our current digital subscribers to validate the effectiveness of our website,

e-newsletters and various sweepstakes

  • Leverage digital analytics tools and metrics to identify key trends, insights and new opportunities, and advocate for digital editorial in meetings with print, marketing, and other stakeholders
  • Be able to ideate on how to generate revenue, and keep up with best practices in online advertising & marketing, particularly in the magazine industry
  • Prepare reports as necessary for editorial, sales and marketing regarding online opportunities and performance
  • Mentor others in web design and content best practices, in the editorial department and the production department, as necessary

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years’ experience writing and manipulating HTML, CSS and PHP in a Web production environment
  • Must be proficient with responsive web design and best practices for performance
  • Media or publishing background preferred
  • Must have a mind for ad strategy, plus insight into advertiser needs & trends
  • Familiarity with digital ad units and standards
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics and DFP, plus the ability to get up to speed with the Tribune’s platform
  • Web development skills and familiarity with API’s
  • Graphic design skills using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop a plus
  • Solid working knowledge of SEO
  • Solid project management skills
  • Must be detail oriented, efficient and able to work independently
