Finance & Operations Leader
NowPow, whose name is a play on knowledge is power, is a women-owned and led technology business based on Chicago’s south side. NowPow’s multi-sided platform is a personalized community referral management solution that enables care professionals – social workers, physicians, justice workers – to manage and close the loop on health and social service referrals and also directly supports patients, members, and clients in their own self-care. NowPow helps people get the care they need, whether they are managing chronic health and social conditions or just staying well.
The Role:
Reporting to the CEO, the Finance and Operations Lead provides the leadership and management necessary to drive the financial sustainability and oversight required to effectively support NowPow’s business strategies. In collaboration with the CEO, this position takes on a leadership role in financial decision-making, provides strategic financial input to senior leadership, manages advisory board relationships, and leads capital fundraising.
In addition, the Finance Lead develops and implements processes and procedures to improve and maintain the financial health of the company. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a fast-paced collaborative environment, positively approaches problem-solving challenges, has strong attention to detail, and a passion for helping people get the care and resources they need.
Strategy and Business Planning:
- Create forward-looking financial models to assess and evaluate the performance of business short and long-term strategic goals
- Oversee NowPow’s financing efforts and ensure the business maintains an optimized capital structure
- Establish yearly business objectives and key financial performance metrics that align with NowPow’s growth and expansion strategies
- Advise and collaborate with CEO and Leadership team for delivery against business plan and financial model forecasts
- Maintain external relationships (i.e. banking, accountant, legal) and strategic alliances with vendors and partners, including negotiations when necessary
- Implement operational policies, procedures and processes as deemed appropriate
- Supervise Senior Finance Associate and outside CPA firm
Fundraising and Relationship Management:
- Lead NowPow’s fundraising rounds efforts; build strong relationships with current and prospective investors; manage possible merger transactions and negotiations
- Own preparation and iteration of the financial model and other due diligence materials as needed
- Provide guidance to CEO and NowPow advisors on capital strategy and funding alternatives; provide recommendations on potential risks/returns
- Oversee advisor relations and communications
Budget and Cash Management:
- Direct payroll, accounting, and audit activities; tightly manage accounts receivable and accounts payable to ensure aggressive cash management
- Implement effective internal controls following GAAP, and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting
- Manage cash flow planning process and ensure availability of funds
IT and Facilities Oversight:
- Oversee IT management including computer provisioning, third party network provider
- Oversee facilities including company leased offices and parking
- Manage new office search as applicable
- Supervise Operations Associate
Requirements:
- 7-10 years of finance management and leadership
- Bachelor’s degree; MBA is highly desired
- Thorough knowledge of GAAP accounting
- Deep understanding of all aspects of the financial life cycle, including revenue, collections, and payables
- Proven excellent QuickBooks, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word skills and comfortable with leveraging technology
- Comfort with external communication and relationship management
- Commitment to leading and managing in a manner consistent with NowPow’s company values
Recommended:
- Knowledge of the venture capital process with experience having gone through a fundraise a plus
- Understanding of SaaS business metrics and how to create and apply them is highly desired
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced dynamic start-up and now remote environment
- Robust negotiating skills to manage customer, vendor, and potential partnership relationships
- Strategic vision with the ability to develop models, processes, and innovative solutions from scratch, with minimal guidance
- Ability to generate new ideas, iterate on various processes, and anticipate problems before they arise
