Job Description

Position Overview 

Invenergy is seeking a Vice President of Corporate Communications responsible for strengthening Invenergy’s reputation with key external audiences and positioning the company as a leader in the clean energy transition. This position, which is based at Invenergy’s headquarters in Chicago, will report to the Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Brand 

 

The Vice President of Corporate Communications will focus on driving the overarching company narrative, influencing key external stakeholders, and strengthening the company’s external reputation. This person will oversee a matrixed team of communicators responsible for executive communications, policy communications, corporate issues management, and consistency of message across communications channels. This person will need to collaborate closely with Project Communications (involving development of renewable and other energy projects), Internal Communications, and Digital Communications to drive Invenergy’s message and brand across Invenergy’s portfolio of corporate projects and initiatives 

 

Responsibilities will include creating, maintaining, and implementing an overarching corporate communications strategy, securing input and buy in from key internal leaders, and then executing it in partnership with various business units, functions, and teams. This person will lead the corporate communications team in developing and executing media programs nationally and internationally, and have a strong understanding of external communications, serving as spokesperson for the company when needed. They will also oversee various corporate communications vendors and contractors. Liaise with key internal and external stakeholders to craft public affairs strategies, build project plans, retain local support, and drive execution while reporting updates and progress to executive leadership.  

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead a team of communications professionals across the organization within Corporate Affairs and Brand, to execute public relations activities that advance Invenergy’s business and policy goals; promote and protect Invenergy’s external reputation and brand; attract talent; and position Invenergy’s subject matter experts as thought leaders.  

  • Manage the development, review, and approval of corporate communications content: press releases, website and video content, media statements, media pitches, etc.  

  • Serve as Corporate spokesperson and key media relations contact. Identify reporter targets to secure earned media and build Invenergy brand awareness and affinity; proactively pitch stories and engage key reporters; respond to media inquiries; and develop an overarching media engagement strategy.  

  • Collaborate in a highly matrixed environment, coordinating communications, managing reviews, and building and maintaining relationships with other Public Affairs, Corporate, and Business leaders.  

  • Collaborate with Project, Digital, and Internal Communications teams, ensuring external positioning and priorities align to Corporate Communications priorities and messaging.  

  • Review and finalize drafted remarks and develop briefing materials to present and participate in executive speeches and conference participation. 

  • Oversee communications metrics and measurement activity through media evaluation & reporting.  

  • Stay current on industry trends and conversation to inform strategic campaigns. 

  • Manage outside public relations and public affairs consultants, and local staff, engaging them in strategy development, campaign execution, and post-project analysis. 

  • Maintain a broad view of activities across Invenergy’s development and operating projects and teams and ensure consistency of process. 

  • Provide communications advice, counsel, and training to senior leaders. Prepare executives to participate in key external events and conferences, preparing them in advance, staffing them (when necessary) at events, and providing thoughtful feedback following completion.  

  • Maintain, build, implement, and measure an executive positioning strategy.  

 

Requirements: 

  • 12+ years of progressive experience within corporate communications, media relations, marketing communications, public relations, publishing, social media, or related field. Agency and energy sector experience preferred. 

  • Experience working with senior-level executives and top-tier media.  

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or relevant discipline preferred.  

  • Energy and climate experience preferred. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills. 

  • Experience working in highly matrixed organizations.  

  • Located in the Greater Chicago area.  

 

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience developing messaging and marketing collateral materials. 

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the desire to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and to meet deadlines and complete time-sensitive duties. 

  • Previous experience leading and developing people and teams. 

  • Ability to travel as needed.
