Job Description

As the Director of our Data Platform, you will be responsible for guiding how data is consumed, leveraged, maintained, and exported by our technology teams and the software we produce. Additionally, you will oversee multiple data-focused teams operating with competencies in software engineering, platform management, architecture, and business intelligence. The ideal candidate for this role is passionate about using data to identify opportunities, risks, and challenges. You should be comfortable working with a wide variety of stakeholders and subject matter experts throughout the organization, both in business-oriented and technical roles. You will work with your manager (the VP of Engineering, Platform), engineering and architectural leads within the broader Platform organization, and stakeholders throughout the business to improve data infrastructure and processes (human and software alike) that will enable the business to mitigate risk and operate at greater scale.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, build, lead, and advocate for technology teams with focus in data engineering, data platform architecture, business intelligence, and data science. You will also manage direct reports that oversee these teams.
  • Track and share progress on strategic initiatives within the divvyDOSE technology organization, as well as with stakeholders and executive leadership.
  • Be the primary champion of and foster a culture of data-driven decision making.
  • Define and socialize data architecture approaches that solve real-world engineering challenges and furthers technology objectives.
  • Work with business stakeholders to maintain a data classification matrix.
  • Ensure that solutions for dealing with data at-rest and in-transit are secure and compliant.
  • Champion domain-driven design and other data modeling tactics that foster alignment between the technology organization and business stakeholders.
  • Develop cross-team relationships and collaborative practices that ensure that we maintain high-quality data repositories.
  • Own and oversee data warehouse and business intelligence platforms, solutions, and vendor contracts.

Requirements

Required Skills

  • Background in software engineering with a deep understanding of SDLC and agile practices.
  • 5+ years of experience working in a role with deep focus in the area(s) of data engineering, data science, and/or data architecture.
  • 3+ years of experience managing software engineers or similar IT professionals.
  • Ability to program in one or more of the following: Python, Ruby, Java, Scala.
  • Expert-level knowledge of SQL, NoSQL, and Time Series database solutions.
  • Expert-level knowledge of database design concepts.
  • Experience managing data warehouses, catalogues, and related infrastructure.
  • Extensive experience building solutions leveraging a major cloud platform (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure).

Desired experience in one or more of the following areas

  • Background in roles focused extensively on (data/software/platform) architecture.
  • Extensive knowledge of leveraging managed and cloud-native services.
  • Experience with healthcare, HL7, or HIPAA Applications.
  • Experience designing and building software for use in a highly-regulated industry.
  • Managing teams and collaborating with stakeholders in a remote/distributed working environment.
  • Experience working with compliance frameworks (HIPAA, HITRUST, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to define and run educational/training programs for technical audiences.
  • Experience with Domain-Driven Design concepts, implementation strategies, and architectures.
  • Familiarity with event-driven, stream-based service communication patterns.

Our engineering office is in River North in the famous Mies van der Rohe building with breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River.
