Data plays a critical role in bringing financial payments to millions of clients every day at Discover. The platforms providing data need to be available and performing to allow that to happen. Our application architecture team will serve as technical thought leaders across enterprise payment platform domains. The Senior Principle Data Solution Architect will be responsible for delivering data architectures that balance data, security, technology and operational excellence; creating and maintaining a big-picture data architecture view across multiple domains; demonstrating deep understanding of data governance, data management, and data platforms (e.g. data quality control, metadata management, data modeling, data security, database); and understand the industry trends in global data regulations (e.g. PCI, RBI, GDPR)

This position leads the creation and update of payment services domain data standards, data policies, and data best practices; drives consensus by articulating highly ambiguous or complex designs effectively and with appropriate details; acts as a mentor for others on architecture artifacts/deliverables; provides holistic view of the data architecture, application dependency and high-level business/data flows. 

Responsibilities 

  • Work collaboratively with architects, engineers, product owners and business partners for the data architect solution.
  • Develop and govern the data standards, schema design, reference architecture and best practices across technology domains.
  • Apply understanding to guide stakeholders in delivery
  • Socialize & form consensus of the data design principles, standards, process, tooling with the business & technology application stakeholders
  • Research, evaluate, prototype emerging payment data regulations, formats, technology and best practice that fit our extreme automation and agile way of working strategy.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to co-develop joint strategies and solutions with key business and BT stakeholders
  • Actively anticipate needs to develop and enhance solutions that meet immediate requirements and enable long-term product objectives
  • Prepare and deliver complex technical strategic proposals for a wide range of audiences, including c-level executives
  • Apply knowledge of products and services to influence strategic conversations with key stakeholders and align priorities with business / product strategy
  • Evaluate and bring in tools that are easy to use and give a holistic view of the data across our organization.
  • Serve as a mentor or provide trainings for peers and junior data designers
  • Develops the technology road-map for big data analytical solutions and real time decision capabilities. Educates the organization on new analytical approaches.
  • Identifies business analytical requirements and expected outcomes. Develops data analytics solution architecture and patterns to meet business needs.
  • Recommends decision technology integration patterns and designs, experiments, tests hypotheses, and build statistical models. Conducts data analyses and designs algorithms.
  • Designs data pipelines, conceptual data models, and physical and schematic data models.
  • Partners with business analysts on the use of statistical tools, analytical tools, and decision engines.

Minimum Qualifications 

At a minimum, here’s what we need from you: 

  • Bachelors degree in Information Technology, Statistics, Computer Science, or related
  • 8+ years of hands-on programming experience, architecting and integrating solutions for complex business problems and modernizing to next generation data applications, or related
  • In lieu of degree, 10+ years of hands-on programming experience, architecting and integrating solutions for complex business problems and modernizing to next generation data applications, or related

Preferred Qualifications 

If we had our say, we’d also look for: 

  • 10+ years of Business Application Design and Development or related
  • Master Degree in Computer Science, or related field 
  • Extensive experience in data architecture, data governance, data/object modeling, and data management experience (one of the must-have skill sets)
  • Proficient experience on data-at-rest and data-in-motion schema design. For example: NoSQL document schema (e.g. JSON schema), Event Registration and REST APIs.
  • Excellent data domain knowledge on digital payment network line of business (One of the must-have skill sets)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Technical research capabilities and strong analytical and problem solving skills (Must-have soft skill)
  • Familiar or hand-on following tooling and/or environment: data modeling tools (e.g. Hackolade), software development language (e.g. Java), CI/CD pipeline tools (e.g. Jenkin), GitHub, Swagger, OpenAPI, AWS RDS.
  • Experience in SAFe framework
  • General knowledge in Platform as a Service (e.g. AWS, OpenShift Container Platform)
  • Openness to change; skill at handling ambiguity;
  • Strong collaboration skill, and able to see other’s point of view
