Technical Data Analyst
We here at Jellyvision are the proud parents of ALEX®, an interactive employee communications platform that happens to share some DNA (and a sense of humor) with the smash-hit trivia video game YOU DON’T KNOW JACK, created by Jellyvision's founder. ALEX makes navigating tricky decisions—like choosing and using employee benefits or improving your financial wellness—easier, faster, and more helpful, not to mention entertaining. The success of the ALEX platform has exceeded our wildest dreams (except for the part where our mom was riding a giraffe), which is why we need talented folks like you to help us help ALEX take over the world.
THAT'S LOVELY... BUT WHAT'S THE JOB?
We’re looking for a humble but ambitious, razor-sharp professional who is passionate about data and would like to grow in that space. As a Technical Data Analyst you are not only excited about discovering insights but also believe that information is power and should be shared. You'll work with the rest of the data team to explore and report on end users’ activities, facilitate tools that enable data exploration, and help our engineering and product teams build our products with data in mind. You’ll also be integral in defining and maintaining data quality, providing solutions for data anomalies in flight and at rest.
You are:
- Analytical: you're able to expediently identify and analyze problems using a variety of intuitive, logical, and creative methods, and you can explain your findings like I’m five, or have five PhDs
- Business savvy: you can think about data as a product; as a consumer of data you can also view data from a user's point-of-view; you can help establish and measure data quality, data access, data compliance and you can tell that story to both engineers and stakeholders of data
- Collaborative: you're comfortable working through ambiguity, seeking out value, working without close supervision. You communicate effectively with the stakeholders to seek out the best data solutions
- Technical: you enjoy tackling tough problems and are not intimidated by new technologies. By the same token you are just as happy digging into and improving on an established codebase
You will:
- Function as a subject matter expert on Jellyvision data and the primary troubleshooter on data issues, help the QA team understand how to test features, and help ensure that analytics are getting generated correctly
- Define the syntax and semantics of analytics coming from our products and provide information to the product team so that work can be effectively prioritized
- Work with and understand data at rest and in flight in our distributed systems, including Snowflake and Mode
- Help support and optimize our data warehouse; be familiar with ETL technologies; have experience in at least one scripting language; be comfortable with bash scripting
- Support and understand the story-telling for data consumers; be comfortable working with different data visualization tools like Mode, Tableau, etc
- Ensure the integrity, availability, and confidentiality of data, database systems and supporting services; optimize performance of database and data warehouse infrastructure
- Work with architects, product managers, data scientists, and engineers to ensure adherence to best practices and data standards
- Collaborate with analysts and data scientists to extract maximum value from data
What kind of technical skills should I have. You know, languages and such...
Skills/Technologies:
- SQL (Postgres, Mysql, Snowflake, Redshift, etc.)
- Building dashboards (Mode Analytics, Tableau, Looker, etc.)
- Python / other scripting languages
- Git
- Excel
- Regular Expressions
What other skills might be nice to have?
- Analytics: you have some interest in creating data science models, learning about data engineering and data pipelines, and are interested in further developing your skills.
- Python/R/Other: Sometimes the best solution means writing some code!
- Javascript/HTML/CSS: because on occasion the best solution requires using web technologies directly.
- ETL Frameworks: AWS Glue, Airflow or Luigi. It's most important that you understand what these frameworks do, rather than knowing a specific one inside and out.
- NoSQL Stores: Snowflake, Kinesis Firehose, DynamoDB, ElasticSearch, or MongoDB. Same as above, it's more important to understand generally how NoSQL data stores function.
What about non-technical skills?
Verbal and written communication skills are key. As a Technical Data Analyst you will be communicating every day with people from the business groups, subject matter experts, product managers, data scientists and engineers. You should also be an avid learner as we are looking for someone who is excited to grow as new challenges come online.
ANYTHING ELSE?
We share a commitment to excellence and a desire to work in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere, so we only hire nice, bright, funny people who are willing to work hard. Our credo is a simple one: be helpful. And we think we can be most helpful if our workforce is as diverse in thought, perspective, and culture as the people who use our products. We are looking to add amazing folks to our team who will bring diversity across many lines, including race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability, gender identity, sex, and country of origin.
ARE THERE ANY PERKS? Yes, we love perks.
- Competitive pay, 401(k) with matching and benefits. We pay 100% of the cost of premiums for medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance for our employees (as long as you qualify for our tobacco-free discount; if you’re a tobacco user, your medical premiums will be higher than $0). We also cover a really nice chunk of the cost of premiums for spouse/dependent medical, dental and vision insurance.
- Casual dress and a flexible schedule. Come in a sweatshirt, jeans, whatever, like everyone else here.
- Creative work environment. We are lucky to work in a place that is full of intelligent, talented and innovative folks. Although most hours the place is deathly quiet (we're a focused bunch), this is punctuated with hilarious outbursts and general merriment, which makes a nice way to spend the day.
- Free food. Every week, we stock our kitchen with free healthy snack foods, and we have a catered lunch every other week to give people a reason to hang out and eat together.
- Easy transportation and lots of love for folks who bike to work. We’re really close to the North/Clybourn red line stop and the Halsted (#8) bus (right by the Apple Store and Mega Whole Foods too), and we have a transit FSA that allows you to dedicate pre-tax dollars to public transportation expenses. A number of our employees like to bike to work, so we also have bike storage, showers and lockers in the office. And for those without their own bike in the city, we offer free divvy memberships – complete with Jellyvision bike helmets you can borrow from the office.
- Did we mention our yoga class? We bring a pro instructor right to the office. Fully subsidized by Jellyvision and fully optional, btw.
- Oh! And we have a massage chair. Not just any massage chair, my friend. It’s the HumanTouch HT 5320 WholeBody™ Massage Chair. Feeling a little stiff? Sit down. Relax. Feel better? Good. Okay, back to work.
AND HOW DO I APPLY?
We look forward to hearing about you and what you do. Make sure your application includes:
