Head of Design Operations

We are looking for our next Head of Design Operations to continue building the DesignOps practice across Morningstar. This role is focused on optimizing, measuring, and advancing our designer's impact across the whole company. In short, our Design Ops team seeks to create the right environment for designers everywhere to do their best work and maintain a meaningful connection to each other as well as to the outside design community.
In this role, you will report directly to the Chief Design Officer and work in close partnership with our Talent & Culture team and with our design, product, engineering, brand and marketing leaders across the broader organization.
Responsibilities
Design Community & Culture
- Work with counterparts in Talent & Culture and Design Leadership to coordinate strategy, planning and operations in order to define, maintain, and support the complete end-to-end designer experience-from recruitment through all steps in career progression and also the alumnus experience
- Monitor design health metrics at both the functional organizational level and business unit level; work with Talent & Culture and design management to analyze, synthesize and communicate accomplishments, opportunities, and problems to appropriate stakeholders
- Ensure recognition and success stories are shared across the organization
- Connect with non-designers in influential positions to help them understand the value of design
- Coordinate and provide standards and models for designer events, rituals, speaker lineups, communication programs, success stories, and recognition programs across the design org with content supplied from business unit designers
Talent Development & Training
- Define & manage the designer experience at Morningstar to include recruiting, onboarding of new team members, career progression, and team building
- Promote a culture of designer development and advancement
- Ensure successful and consistent use of our people development toolset: job catalog, competencies, training programs and other tools to manage performance, promotions, and hiring practices consistently across the organization
- Develop and deliver designer training and curricula for designer onboarding, toolset training, and new skill development
- Partner with design managers to identify growth opportunities across teams and business units for designers
- Coordinate and align hiring process to meet evolving needs of org and ensures it is practiced consistently across the business unit
- Own recruiting agency relationships in partnership with Talent & Culture
Scale & Enablement
- Lead the broader Design Operations team and initiatives
- Oversee the development of design playbooks, toolkits, and templates that enable designers to collaborate with stakeholders more effectively and bring high-quality products to market quickly
- Oversee the strategic direction and cross-team coordination of the Morningstar Design System to effectively scale design standards
- Identify broader org needs and gaps with regards to tools, documentation, and resources
- Handle logistics and relationships with external partners (approving invoices, vendor selection, onboarding, etc.)
Qualifications
We're interested in hearing how you've scaled and enabled design teams, fostered design culture, and developed designer development programs. Here are some of the qualifications we're seeking:
- 8 years of relevant professional experience, including design management, project/program management of design deliverables, and operations management
- 3+ years as a people/team manager
- Experience leading and supporting high-performance, collaborative, design teams; expertise in design development processes
- Ability to lead both with and without formal responsibility
- Familiarity with design systems and design process management and co-creation tools
- Have built and led design operations teams and programs at scale
- Great written and verbal communication ability at diverse levels-able to be effective with executives and inspiring with design teams
- Bachelor's degree
