Description
For Caterpillar, digital means using technology to extract data from our machines and engines and transform it into valuable recommendations or "insights," to help customers make better, more informed decisions and help Caterpillar make robust products with the lowest total ownership cost. Our products generate and process large amounts of data from sensors, on-board models, and control algorithms in real-time creating real-world machine usage information. Electronic Management roles supervise digital positions. Reporting to this position are various levels of managers, supervisors, team leaders, engineers and support personnel in one or more geographic location.
Job Duties
The incumbent must be a visionary leader and integrator and is typically responsible for multiple technologies, multiple functions or disciplines, an entire product line or process, or both process and product development and integration. Incumbent is ultimately responsible for orchestrating the movement of people within their organization and beyond to maximize their development and that of the larger Caterpillar organization. Key responsibilities include tracking and monitoring the organization's business plan, reviewing, and monitoring first level project milestones and budgets, owning processes, guiding the definition of work processes, facilitating the acquisition of tools, physical resources, and intellectual capital, building teams, conducting technical reviews and overseeing departmental budget roll-up. Also has a major role in interfacing with internal and external customers, gathering and responding to customer feedback and guiding the organization's focus towards meeting customers' technology, product, service and business needs. Previous team leadership experience and organization skills are necessary. Advanced program management skills are critical. This role requires the integration of major operations, technologies, products, and diverse strategies. Incumbents will be dealing with a global marketplace both in terms of customers and in terms of sourcing suppliers, production, and talent. Position requires excellent human relations, interpersonal, and communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive issues, mentor, and coach and/or persuade others on new technologies, new applications, or potential solutions. Ever increasing skills in the Caterpillar Leadership competencies - Be Strategic, Focus on the Enterprise, Global Leadership, Lead Change, Hold Self and Others Accountable, Know your Customer, Build Engagement, and Coach for Development. The incumbent would set strategy at the division level. The division would solve problems for multiple technologies, multiple functions or disciplines, an entire product line or process, or both process and product development and integration. While the culture of specific business units and service units vary, this position faces ongoing change - increased competitive pressures, increasing product complexity and ever-increasing customer demands. Significant challenges from managing new technology, managing the leadership in the organization, sourcing technical people, replacing expertise and growing technical experts can be expected. Therefore, the ability to draw upon foundational product development skills such as conceptual design, development of product and/or process, data analysis & extraction, failure resolution & prevention, technical project management, internal and external requirements management, and cost-value management is required. The ability to draw upon knowledge of more than one engineering function, technology, component, system, product, or process is required. This role requires that the incumbent increases understanding of the business, the business aspects of technology and the customers' business and needs. The major focus of this position is strategic and may be one of sponsor for creativity in key process development and change, as well as accomplishing results through others from multiple organizations and functions. Decisions will impact multiple technologies, multiple functions or disciplines, an entire product line or process, or both process and product development and integration. The products and services provided vary from product concepts to products and processes, intellectual property, plans and resources. Decisions made by incumbent will affect total product lines, major company processes, facilities, and multiple technologies. Decisions will impact public perception of Caterpillar, the technology it uses and its applications, warranty, company strategy and partnerships with universities, research organizations and other external groups. The incumbent has primary accountability for operating expense budget. This role is accountable for protecting Caterpillar's intellectual property by properly classifying and restricting access to Caterpillar technical information related to their area of responsibility.
Basic Qualifications
Must have an accredited EE or ME Engineering degree with 15 or more years of experience. Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience required.
