Job Purpose:
The Innovation and Emerging Technology Enterprise Architect will be accountable for managing the Emerging Technology incubation process for Enterprise Architecture (EA) as well as help improve the IT enabled innovation process across Caterpillar.
Description:
Job duties will be adapted to the recommendations of the currently ongoing Emerging Technology Workstream as part of the IT Strategy work. Employee may also be responsible for performing other job duties occasionally as assigned. Responsibilities of the job are:

  • Manage the EA Emerging Technology process
  • Conduct research to identify emerging technologies that have potential to unlock new value-added capabilities at Caterpillar
    • General research such as Gartner hype cycles, CEB emerging tech maturity spider diagram
    • Understand where Caterpillar is already internally experimenting with emerging technologies and for what business purpose
  • Identify highest priority emerging technologies to focus on
    • Conduct Proof of Concepts or Proof of Technology experiments with a business partner on selected technologies to demonstrate business value and buy in to invest (typically Q2-Q3)
    • Secure funding for following year to pilot
  • Improve the IT enabled innovation process
    • Manage and be the SME/trainer of effective innovation
      • Continuous improvement of the innovation handbook
      • Create additional accelerators that allow Caterpillar to innovate faster and better in IT enabled capabilities
      • Train key partners like Matrix Architects, Business Innovation Leaders or other targeted communities in best practices around innovation
  • Effectively partner with Business, Federated IT and fellow EAs in the EA Emerging Technology incubation and innovation process


Basic Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in information technology.
  • High intellectual curiosity and ability to learn new technologies and new business processes quickly.
  • Solution design capability across the architecture stack (Solution Architecture experience)
    • Business/Process
    • Application
    • Information & integration (Data)
    • Technology (compute, storage, network, security, ...)


Top Candidate Will Also Have:

  • Understanding of architecture stack across Caterpillar's diverse businesses.
  • Team leadership, management preferred (employee or external/consultant). This does not need to be formal people leadership experience such as project Management where one has to lead people outside of their chain of command.
  • Demonstrated excellent planning and organizational skills with an established track record of positively influencing change.
  • Solid verbal and written communication as well as presentation skills. Ability to communicate to senior leaders as well as individual contributors of all levels.
