Caterpillar's Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) is responsible for design, manufacture, marketing, and sales of industrial engines for both Cat and Perkins brands product engines. Our global facilities enable us to support our customers wherever they are located in the world.
Caterpillar's IPSD Engine Performance Development Team in Mossville, IL is looking for a person to serve as engine system development engineer in our Power Systems Lab at the Tech Center. In this role, you will be responsible for delivery of diesel engine development programs for IPSD's 9-liter through 18-liter machine and commercial product offerings. This position is responsible for directing work through the engine test cells, using data analysis tools to process and summarize data, creating engine and aftertreatment calibrations based on both test data and modeling tools, and certifying the final engine calibration. This position collaborates with highly engaged and technically capable team members, as well as manages multiple projects and assignments simultaneously that are complex in nature which support and enhance Caterpillar product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability.
Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Work with a team of test engineers and lab support staff to plan & execute engine development and certification plans
- Translate technical requirements into detailed plan test plans, instrumentation requirements, and mitigation plans for test cell work
- Author test instructions and work orders to advance engine test cell plans to completion. Assist in troubleshooting data quality issues with test cell operations staff.
- Manage time and cost accounting of multiple test cells through VOEE and PMO tools
- Optimize engine and aftertreatment calibration within requirements, hardware limits, and emissions regulations; populate corresponding maps to build calibration into software.
- Prepare and deliver technical project summaries and final test results
- Contribute to multiple New Product Introduction (NPI) rating development projects, New Technology Integration (NTI) projects, and emissions certification projects
- Support Built-In-Quality (BIQ) efforts to reduce inefficiency in design and test lab processes
Basic Qualifications:
- Education - Bachelor's degree or higher in accredited Engineering field (i.e. Mechanical, Chemical, Aero, Ag)
- Experience - 3+ years of engine and/or aftertreatment performance development or engine design
Top Candidates Will Also Have:
- Master's degree (or equivalent) in an accredited Engineering field (i.e. Mechanical, Chemical, Aero, Ag)
- Experience with engine combustion & emissions performance, engine calibration, & lab testing
- Self-starter with strong technical leadership skills
- The ability to work in - and enjoy working in - a dynamic environment; adapting to and driving change
- A willingness to work on a broad range of engine applications
- A sense of urgency balanced with a strong commitment to quality
- The ability to work/lead multiple projects simultaneously and to make sound priority decisions
- Strong communication skills - oral and written complemented by the ability to develop/deliver technical presentations
