Job Description
Managers within Technology at Nordstrom help create an inspiring workplace where talented people are empowered to drive amazing customer experiences and business results. Through broad industry and practice knowledge and hands-on technical management experience, the Engineering Manager guides a team of professionals to execute strategy and tactics that deliver desired results.
Nordstrom is looking for a talented Engineering Manager to lead our Marketing Creative Program and supporting services. As Engineering Manager for the Team, you will report to the Director of Engineering and lead a distributed team of software engineers. In partnership with technical program management, you will define processes and measurements to ensure strength in performance and delivery. You will own technical solutions-in accordance with Nordstrom's engineering standards-and you will be accountable for recruiting and hiring talent as well as coaching and mentoring your team members in their career.
An Engineering Manager on the Marketing Technology team is responsible for the applications and backend services that enable Creative Operations and Design, Brand, Customer Marketing, and Digital Marketing to plan, design, and publish multi-channel campaigns. The goal is to deliver a best in class experience for our internal customers by furnishing all tools needed to deliver engaging, and performant marketing campaigns that drive Nordstrom's top-line while providing bottom-line SG&A efficiencies.
You are a highly technical leader with a bias towards action and the ability to drive consensus. You are comfortable discussing software architecture and leveraging data to influence decisions. You have a proven understanding of the fundamentals of agile processes, deep knowledge of software development lifecycle and an experience to draw from that helps you build towards a future state while making smart tradeoffs to meet current objectives. You are a creative problem solver and you know how to measure and improve your products and teams.
A day in the life...

  • Assist in enhancing department vision and strategies to support company goals and receive guidance from more senior leaders
  • Create training opportunities for team to learn the latest technologies and methodologies
  • Ensure team has the tools, resources, and information they need to be successful
  • Hire capable and motivated talent/teams that can deliver swiftly and predictably, adjusting in an agile fashion to deliver solutions aligned with business needs
  • Contribute to architecture, coding, test plans, project plans, deployment planning and operations to drive excellence and lead team towards its goals
  • Employ continuous improvement methodologies across own team (e.g. quantifies impacts customer first, waste elimination, increased productivity, iterates quickly, shorten feedback loop, experience creating relevant KPIs)
  • Leading the development of technical solutions (e.g., APIs, SDKs, etc.) that support discovering, enriching, and surfacing data across Nordstrom
  • Developing and fostering a healthy and collaborative culture for your team that embodies both industry best practices and Nordstrom values
  • Growing and developing an incredible team of talented and motivated engineers with high expectations around individual ownership and impact
  • Driving the roadmap and technical vision for the team, collaborate with product groups and partner teams to deliver value to our customers
  • Influencing key decisions on architecture and implementation of scalable, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions
  • Being the bar raiser, pushing the limit on how solutions are designed and built, how systems are operated, and how we support our engineers to deliver better experiences for our customers


You own this if you have...

  • Experience (2+ years) managing/leading a team of junior and senior engineers to achieve impactful results (preferred)
  • 5+ years professional experience of software development is required, experience on the Linux/Java platform is preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience of building solutions in an agile environment
  • Experience with Java, SQL, Python, & Kubernetes
  • Experience with streaming technologies such as Kafka
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud-based environments and tools (DynamoDB a plus)
  • Familiarity with React, Node.js and Golang is a big plus
  • Real passion for a build, measure and learn approach to software delivery
  • Enthusiasm for learning and improving yourself-especially as it pertains to your career in technology
  • Excitement for automating everything-once a process is established you are eager to hand it off to robots in order to start working on the next thing of value
  • Demonstrable experience owning and operating business critical systems servicing internal and external customers and vendor management
  • Deep experience in development, are comfortable working in code and skilled at explaining and advocating for new technologies and solutions.
  • Profound care for your people and the desire to help those who want to help themselves
  • Demonstrable ability to establish a vision, define a roadmap, and to execute on it
  • Pragmatism. You can prioritize, simplify, and make a path toward results.

A big plus is demonstrated experience with....

  • Experience in AWS, Kafka, Spark, Kubernetes and REST API is a big plus
  • Experience with JavaScript, JQuery, React and NodeJS is a plus
  • Experience with Python, PySpark, SQL is a plus
  • Experience with the following products is a big plus - Sales Force, Adobe Creative Cloud, Experience Manager, Google Analytics & Tag Manager
  • Machine learning and data science concepts/ knowledge is a plus
