Job Description
As an experienced Validation Team Lead engineer, you will serve as a technical contributor on LPSD Electrification NPI/CPI programs, projects and assignments that are complex in nature that support and enhance Caterpillar product performance, durability, reliability, quality and serviceability.
The primary responsibility of the Validation team lead is to determine reliability of Advanced Power Products (APP) systems that spans electrification product offerings such as Energy Storage containers, mobile hybrid electric solutions & components such as Inverters, Battery Systems and Hydrogen Fuel cells.
Develop new test or simulation protocols to accelerate the understanding of the cause of system & component failures. Analyze multiple sources of data (lab, field, simulation) to develop predictive life models for components or engine system and make recommendations for design improvements. Champion the use & application of advanced reliability methods to resolve CPI or NPI issues. Be strategic contributor and leader in the development of Predictive Product Development Excellence at LPSD.
Overall the validation engineer plays a crucial role in reducing post production warranty & improving customer experience.
Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead & facilitate, multiple complex NPI/NTI program system & component level validation GW-L through GW-6, TRL1 - TRL4
  • Applying reliability engineering methods to improve product reliability
  • Determine root cause physics of failure and provide recommended corrective actions
  • Use warranty data and cross-functional input to develop product requirements
  • Develop Accelerated Life Test plans to meet program deliverables
  • Responsible for creation of system level FMEAs, design of validation controls, application of reliability engineering methods to predict engine system/component life
  • Collaborate with L3 validation engineers in developing system/component level validation plans
  • Contribute to design of new products, processes or systems
  • Predicting and communicating NPI program validation metrics to customer facing organizations
  • Improving product validation methodology, documentation & maintenance
  • Must keep up-to date on changing customer needs as the project progresses. Stay current with new technology and provide guidance and direction on projects to less experienced engineers, technologists & technicians
  • Lead, mentor and train others in reliability methods


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Metallurgy, Instrumentation,...)
  • 5 - 7 years of progressive related product development experience from following industries: Automotive, Construction & Mining Machines, Rail locomotive, Electrical Generator systems, Electrical Grid Utility, electrical measurement devices, etc.
  • Strong technical skills and the ability/desire to continue to learn validation engineering
  • Advanced program management skills to lead multiple projects simultaneously and to make sound priority decisions
  • Solid interpersonal skills - the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues, mentor and coach and/or persuade others on new technologies, new applications, or potential solutions
  • Strong communication skills - oral and written complemented by the ability to develop/deliver technical presentations
  • Demonstrated leadership - the ability to assemble and lead diverse teams, to direct the work of others in pursuit of common goals, and to deliver results on time and within budget, while meeting customer requirements


Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Experience in design, build & test of: Hybrid Electrical Powertrain, High Voltage Battery systems, Electrical Motors, Regenerative energy systems, Electrical power grids
  • Detailed working knowledge of Power Electronics, Embedded control systems & logic
  • Software skills: Matlab Simulink, C++, Python
  • Lab or field test experience - Accelerated Life Test/DOE/Environmental stress testing
  • Knowledge of Basic Statistical methods & Hypothesis testing
  • Systems engineering experience - Reliability allocation, DFMEA, DVP&R, Mean time to failure, Physics of failure, Robust design
  • Reliability modeling experience - Weibull & Weibayes analysis, risk forecasting
  • Familiar with Caterpillar standard post-processing tools for analyzing test data from lab or field
  • Previous 6 Sigma Green Belt experience
  • Initiative - a self-starter that requires minimal supervision who anticipates issue and takes appropriate action without being directed
  • High personal and professional ethics
