Job Description
The Analytical Platform Database Engineering team at Discover is looking for a Lead Cloud Database Administrator (DBA) to join a diverse team dedicated to database administration for large analytical data warehouses comprised of on premises and cloud technologies. On this team you will perform the required duties of analytical database administrator while also collaborating closely with all teams that are serviced by our supported technologies.
We are looking for the individual to develop, administer and maintain databases for Data and Analytics. The candidate should have a strong understanding of the requirements for data storage and accessibility, strong understanding of networks, data protection and databases.
Strong understanding and experience with database technologies and methodologies including: AWS Cloud, Redshift, Snowflake, Teradata or other RDBMS are critical to our success.
As a Platform Engineer, you’ll use code to bridge the gap between software and hardware and produce an efficient and reliable infrastructure. By harnessing your creativity and passion for continuous learning, you’ll create a fully digitized end-to-end process for managing the lifecycle of infrastructure resources. You’ll deploy programmable, easily customizable infrastructure that embraces change and automates the deployment process to reduce risk. You’ll also analyze all platform level changes, monitor application impact, and provide appropriate technical solutions to resolve all issues quickly and efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Achieves product commitments (and influences others to do the same) by using informal leadership & highly developed communication skills and contributes to or led technology communities
- Uses automation, system tools, open source solutions, observability and 'security first' principles in daily work
- Contributes to team agile ceremonies, leads demos and presentations, helps new engineers learn established norms
- Initiates high level solution design approaches, and guides team to achieve desired key software delivery capabilities using automated, coded enterprise and observability
- Participates in internal speaking and advocacy events
- Supports research activities to adopt new technology solutions in ways of developing new capabilities
- Continues professional education and create opportunities for core product teams to learn engineering best practices
- Coaches immediate chapter and is actively fosters the adoption of new technologies
Minimum Qualifications
At a minimum, here’s what we need from you:
- Bachelors – Computer Science or related
- 4+ Years – (Software) Engineering, DevOps or related
- Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale
Preferred Qualifications
Bonus Points If You Have:
- 4 or more years of experience building, managing and administering data platforms like Snowflake, Teradata, Redshift, or other Data Warehouse data platforms. Cloud/AWS and on prem technology
- 3 years of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- Scientific-computing experience (Python, R, ML)
- 1-3 years of supporting a large data platform and data pipelining.
- Familiarity with ETL tools (such as Abinitio) and BI tools (Tableau, SAS)
- Knowledge of Graph databases
- Work closely with Data engineers to tune queries, implement physical models, design and implement secure data sharing.
