This position
As a Software Engineer on the Performance team, you will collaborate across teams especially engineering, DevOps, and product in order to enable application instrumentation of our code-base. You will also perform proactive data analytics on the data you’ve collected in order to provide insight and recommendation that will improve the performance and reliability of our key products like, document generation, collaboration, and negotiation which is a key part of DocuSign’s System of Agreement platform. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for understanding how an application performs, how the underlying infrastructure impacts and application, how to instrument and measure key components of our application, and also be comfortable working across boundaries in order to provide insight and recommendations to engineering and architects based on findings.

We are looking for a Software Engineer with a focus on application reliability and performance to partner closely with operations, engineering, design, and product management, to instrument, own, and deliver application level telemetry in order to enhance our product performance, scalability, and reliability. This candidate must have the technical prowess to write fast and efficient code, find inefficiencies and influence others to make performance improvements. In addition, this engineer needs to measure and demonstrate performance gains in a scientific way, by building/running workloads or simulations. The candidate should be confident in discussing and engaging in a project’s design phase for its performance and scalability considerations. You are the performance expert for your scrum team and should own your team’s performance related problems on production.

This position is an Individual Contributor and reports to the Manager, Performance Engineering.

Responsibilities

• Instrument our code-base with hooks and integrate it into our centralized monitoring tool, in order to capture timings for all of our key methods, classes, 3rd party remote calls.
• Create a standard methodology and best practice guideline for other software engineers to help enable them to continuously and consistently add additional hooks as they write new code.
• Perform data analytics on the instrumented data captured in order to improve our application’s performance.
• Continuously identify any system or application areas that need performance optimization
• Attend and participate in scrum meetings as necessary as the performance-focused engineer, bringing attention to any designs that need performance considerations.
• Work with devops and product to present them with performance analysis results, design/architectural recommendations, performance improvements, scalability recommendations, and/or any trends that may impact the application’s performance.
• Early and constant focus on system and application performance at each stage of the build process.
• Assess and provide input from a performance perspective to the architecture being recommended.
• Understand business workload including off-peak and peak windows to ensure application is performant under high workloads.
• Work in ASP.NET MVC, SQL Databases, HTML and CSS, and JavaScript, as well as Elasticsearch, Cassandra or similar NoSQL databases.

Basic Qualifications

• BS in CS, EE or equivalent work experience.
• 6+ years professional experience developing software solutions using object oriented methodologies and design patterns in a .NET/C# environment
• 4+ years professional experience working with system and application performance and reliability and/or capacity planning.

Preferred Qualifications

• Enjoy fast-paced entrepreneurial environment where you can solve difficult problems using current technologies and tools.
• Experience with search platforms such Lucene, Solr or ElasticSearch
• Experience analyzing and interpreting large volume of production data using Zabbix/Logstash/Grafana to understand throughput, latency, memory and CPU utilization
• Experience with application performance monitoring tools like DynaTrace or AppDynamics
• Knowledge of statistical analysis and experimental design techniques
• Working knowledge of Linux operating system
• Understand business workload including off-peak and peak windows to ensure application is performant under high workloads.
• Collaborate well with other engineers and team members when brainstorming, designing, and implementing new solutions.
• Help the team succeed by thinking about ways to improve processes, suggesting ways to make the team more effective, and mentoring and modeling engineering best practices.
• Passion for new technologies
• Care deeply about writing high-performance, reusable code for components that will be used across our product.
