Department Overview
Software Engineering Manager - Chicago, ILMotorola Solution’s is building a modern cloud offering for our largest product segment, which serves our public safety and mission critical customers. We are seeking a dynamic software engineering manager to lead our development team across several design locations worldwide. The software engineering manager will report directly into the Product Development Director located in our new world headquarters in downtown Chicago.
Job Description
The individual will be accountable for driving the following behaviors:
Hands on approach to engineering – when we work at Motorola, we are all engineers who are excited about technology. No hiding behind spreadsheets.
Creating a culture of excitement around constant improvement – frequent integration and deployment through a robust pipeline, deep end to end testing with automation, and proactive notification of QA and production issues.
Timely execution of Agile processes-
Host daily Scrum of Scrums standup with Product Owners from all Agile teams to ensure alignment and that impediments are quickly addressed.
Enable Product Owners to have successful backlog grooming and sprint kickoff sessions that are transparently communicated to stakeholders.
Collaborate with Product Management on weekly Front End Initiative Planning activities that involve scope option discussions, individual scrum team impact/availability and upcoming commitments – no sprawling list of features that will never be completed.
Quickly identify and spearhead needed spikes to enable proper scoping and costing of effort.
Host meaningful end-to-end sprint demos with functionality to be promoted to a QA environment. Foster environment where project stakeholders and the engineering team are engaged and providing active feedback on demo.
Enforce the zero defect behavior - Daily validation that all teams are prioritizing defects over features to eliminate accumulation of technical debt
Driving personal relationships - Constant focus on growing personal relationships across all team members and finding ways to encourage their individual growth
Desired Skills:
Experience developing applications for cloud based architecture utilizing microservices and multi-tenant database architecture
Development or design experience with feature toggles, canary releases, or subscription management platforms (Chargify / Zuora / Chargebee)
Demonstrated understanding / proficiency in application containerization (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
Experienced in common DevOps methodologies and knowledgeable in tools such as Chef, Puppet, Ansible, GitLab, etc.
Experience with test automation and continuous integration and deployment
Experience with System of Systems Integration via machine-to-machine interfaces
User Interface development experience (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript)
Experienced in embedded software development
Experience designing and implementing web-based User Interfaces
Experienced in embedded software development
Demonstrated proficiency in software development in a leadership capacity
Demonstrated experience working in Agile teams leveraging Scrum, Kanban or other methodologies and/or understanding of Agile development concepts
Experience coordinating local and remote international development resources
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor's in Computer Science or related field
- 5+ years of experience
