Job Description:
The Large Power Systems Division currently has a newly formed Engineer position located in Mossville, IL. This new position will provide performance simulation for the expanding portfolio of electrification cooling systems. Simulation-led design is especially critical to enable robust product development for the fast-paced electrification programs that include significant new content and complex system interactions.
The cooling performance analyst will utilize analytical techniques (1-D and 3-D simulation tools) to provide simulation support for electrification projects across various Caterpillar platforms, as well as cooling performance simulation for diesel-powered applications. This includes conducting 1-D system simulation for up-front system sizing and component selection for cooling systems as well as performing high-end Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation for virtual design and validation. The analyst will provide analysis and simulation to develop and deploy technologies for battery / fuel cell thermal management.
The engineer must have good communication skills to effectively collaborate with the various product development teams to deliver validated design solutions to our challenging program deliverables and timelines simultaneously. The position includes strong collaboration with our design, system, and validation partners.
Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct application specific cooling system analysis projects
- Develop cooling system layouts, component selection, sizing and optimizing the cooling air and water systems using 1-D simulation tools
- Collaborate with design partners to meet technical and regulatory requirements
- Conduct component CFD to determine performance characteristics
- Develop CFD models to understand air flow through cooling packages
- Develop underhood thermal CFD models to predict component temperatures
- Collaborate with test engineers and correlate analysis models
- Perform analysis to assist in resolving cooling-related field problems
- Contribute to improvements in simulation methods and processes
- Help to establish technical requirements and specifications for new products
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Agricultural, or Aerospace engineering preferred)
- Relevant engineering experience:
- Bachelor's degree: 3+ years
- Master's degree: 1+ years
- Doctorate degree
- 2+ years of CFD and/or 1-D engine, power systems or machine systems analysis experience
- Strong background and interest in thermo-sciences
- Clear verbal and written communication skills
- Project management skills allowing for handling of multiple projects and priorities
Top Candidates will also have:
- Master or Doctorate degree in Mechanical, Agricultural or Aerospace engineering
- Strong technical knowledge with the ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, and process partners
- Working knowledge of engine, powertrain cooling and/or electrification systems
- 2+ years of experience using Fluent, 1-D analysis tools and Creo
- Experience with underhood CFD of power systems or heavy construction/mining equipment
- Knowledge of the Caterpillar New Product Introduction (NPI) process
