POSITION 

The Controller contributes to the overall success of the organization by proactively supporting the CFO through effective management of the financial operations for the organization.  This includes being accountable for the financial reporting infrastructure (people, process, systems) required to maintain the day-to-day operational requirements of the finance department and to deliver timely and accurate financial information to support the Company.  The Controller plays a critical role in supporting the senior leadership team by providing key information for strategic decision making to enable the business to scale according to business plans and objectives.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Financial accounting and reporting

  • Maintain and deliver timely and accurate financial statements, reports and Management Discussion & Analysis in accordance with GAAP

  • Deliver monthly department KPI reports, including key SaaS metrics to the CFO and Management Team, to track performance against Company objectives

  • Develop, implement, and monitor adequate internal controls over financial reporting throughout the Company

  • Oversee the bookkeeping function including maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll

  • Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions

  • Introduce best in class automated financial reporting infrastructure by utilizing current tools and/or evaluating new technology tools to enhance the reporting function

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure that personnel and financial information is secure and stored in compliance with current legislation

Tax Compliance:

  • Ensure all corporate tax reporting requirements and deadlines are met including state/federal income tax and sales/use tax filings

  • Complete NEXUS analyses for all US states where the Company could have tax exposure

Commissions:

  • Ensure commissions are paid out according to the approved sales commission plans

  • Introduce adequate reporting and monitoring processes in conjunction with Sales & Marketing team

Financial Planning & Analysis:

  • Prepare monthly department reports and review with Department Leads

  • Develop detailed forward looking forecasts for presentation to the Management Team

  • Identify profit improvement opportunities and make recommendations to Management Team

Credit & Collections:

  • Establish credit policies appropriate for the business, including due diligence of new customers and monitoring of current customers

  • Introduce & execute collections processes to ensure outstanding accounts are paid within established credit terms

Treasury:

  • Effectively monitor the company’s cash flow

  • Assist with preparation of 12 month-rolling cash flow forecasts

Capital Planning

  • Manage the acquisition of capital assets and ensure that assets are properly recorded, amortized, and disposed of as appropriate

Payroll preparation and administration:

  • Oversee all payroll functions to ensure that employees are paid in a timely and accurate manner

  • Process and submit statutory and benefits remittances on time

Other Finance operations:

  • Oversee administration of signing authority matrix for review and approval of all operating and staff expenses according to company policy

  • Oversee the management of all leases, key vendor contracts and other financial commitments

Information Technology:

  • Support for all technology applications utilized within accounting and/or that interface with accounting applications for internal and external reporting purposes.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION 

  • University degree in Accounting

  • 5+ years of experience in a management capacity in a Finance team

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • Knowledge and proficiency of generally accepted accounting principles for technology companies

  • Acts as a leader within the organization and internally to develop the accounting team as required

  • Able to think strategically in a forward looking manner while maintaining an attention to the detail of the day to day financial operations of the business

  • Plays a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations to enable the business to scale according to business plans

  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and financial acumen

  • Proactively prepares business cases, reports, metrics and recommendations for senior management that may be useful for decision making purposes

  • Clear communication and writing skills

ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  • External financial statements and MD&A completed accurately within established deadlines

  • KPI reporting completed accurately within established deadlines

  • Payroll completed accurately within established deadlines

  • Audits completed satisfactory and within required deadlines 

  • Timely collection of accounts receivable

  • Cash monitoring

 

TECHNOLOGY USED 

  • General ledger and invoicing applications

  • MS Office- Word, Excel, PowerPoint

  • Gmail and Google Docs and Google Sheets
