We are looking for a Senior Director of Medical Affairs who will lead a national team of US-based oncology MSLs who represent the Tempus platform of DNA- and RNA-based next generation sequencing (NGS) testing products. The role involves day-to-day operational management of the MSL team including planning for MSL coverage and support in the area of product education for internal teams and external physicians. The MSL National Director is responsible for collaborating with the SVP and VP of Medical Affairs, and Medical Affairs Directors/Associate Directors in the development of the MSL role and optimizing implementation of Medical Affairs team strategy. The MSL National Director is responsible for generation of MSL goals and objectives and tracking of metrics related to team performance and achievements as well as collection and tracking of field insights and competitive intelligence. Mentoring and training of MSLs and career development plans for individual MSLs are a key component of the manager role. The MSL National Director may assist the SVP and VP of Medical Affairs with special projects as needed.
Overview
This position requires experience in a field-based Medical Affairs role and an ability to assess needs within multiple geographies and an ability to execute on business plans to meet those needs. Reporting to the VP of Medical Affairs, the manager will be a key member of the Medical Affairs Leadership team. The Director, MSLs must possess the ability to adapt to changing business priorities and is responsible for deployment of field medical personnel to meet business objectives. This position requires a strong working knowledge of the regulatory and compliance environment relating to the molecular diagnostic space.
Functional Management Responsibilities
- Recruit and hire MSLs as needed; drive individual development plans and programs for retention of talent
- Maintain MSL nationwide coverage plan based upon unique and changing territory needs and ensure medical affairs resources are deployed effectively and consistently to meet regional needs
- Manage the performance and development of MSLs towards accountability and ownership, including establishment of goals and expectations for MSL team, tracking and synthesis of team metrics, and sharing of metrics with medical leadership
- Create an onboarding and ongoing educational program to maintain and grow the quality and consistency of scientific and medical knowledge of MSLs; develop and manage journal clubs, training calls/events, and skills development workshops for the team
- Mentor MSLs in the development and execution of research proposals, including development of abstracts, posters, and manuscripts
- Day-to-day management of the MSL team including ensuring adherence to travel and expense policies and compliance regulations
- Provide coaching and feedback on job performance for MSLs
Other Responsibilities
- Represents the MSL Team in the Medical Affairs Leadership team and other internal teams as necessary
- Ensures compliance with company SOPs
- Effective partnership with cross-functional teams
- Identifies and resolves any operational needs/issues and processes affecting the MSLs and implementing best practices within the MSL team
- Proactively coordinates field need for medical/scientific knowledge required for management and support of Tempus products and relative disease states
- Ensures appropriate MSL staffing for external conferences and internal company meetings such as Area meetings or National Sales Meeting
- Works closely with the sales leadership to ensure optimal alignment of field resources in a compliant manner
- Attends appropriate scientific meetings to keep abreast of medical knowledge and maintain awareness of research activities and latest developments in cancer genomic profiling and therapeutics
Qualifications
- Education: Doctoral degree in science-related field (MD, PharmD, PhD) is preferred
- Experience: Minimum of 3+ years in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry in medical affairs or clinical development; MSL experience and MSL team management experience strongly preferred
